Is it normal to be sooo tired after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I only had my band placed yesterday, so I know there is a lot of healing.

But I keep getting soooo tired - must lie down and nap tired.

Is that normal? At first I thought it was the Stadol pain med, but then I didn't take any this morning and it was still that way - 3 cat naps in a couple hours.

I'm just overwhelmingly tired. Not sure if it's the meds or the healing from surgery or the fact that I haven't had real food in so long.

I'm just tired and woozy and it's even hard to read/post because my eyes aren't working well.

Normal?

Its a big ordeal. In reality I think that many people feel more tired than normal for weeks or months. It took about 3+ months for me to start feeling back to normal and then suddenly I had even more energy than I had felt in years. Give it time and take those naps. It can only do your body good.

Hi Linda just wondering how the op went? I think it was you that was posting with queries about your preop diet and having to eat extra to get through, am i correct?

Did you end up sticking to the preop diet in the end or not and did it have an effect on your surgery?

Yes, that was me. My doctor ordered Clear liquids for 2 week - no calories (sugar free clear liquids) and no Protein shakes or anything. I wasn't able to follow it that first week because I was on a business trip in a country where receiving their hospitality was important.

But I started on it last Friday, modifying it by adding a serving of Protein in each evening at dinner. Until Monday - that was the last day I modified it. I followed it to the letter Tue-Wed-Thur.

My weigh in at the surgery center was 20 pounds down in that 1 week period (I had weighed in there the Friday before when I went in to pre-register and meet with anesthesia).

So 20 pounds down in one week.

The surgery went fine - he was very pleased with everything. From the time they wheeled me into the operating room until I awoke from the anesthesia was 1 hour and 15 minutes - no problems or complications.

I had surgery on the 18th of May and went back to work on the 21st...I got up that morning and showered and I literally had to sit for 10-15 minutes just to get my energy back to blow dry my hair afterwards! Then just driving to work I was miserably tired. I came home that afternoon and slept for like, four hours. I think it's pretty normal to be completely exhausted for up to a good week or so after surgery.

Your body isn't working great when all you've had for days is clear liquids! I had the same issue where I couldn't even see words clearly because I was so tired!

I was tired until about day 3 then I was fine, then I started on mushies on the 26th and my energy has gone was down again. It's obviously because we're not getting enough nutrients and stuff. The latest I've been able to stay up is 11pm and even when I did stay up then before being banded I just went to bed cuz there was nothing to do, now it's out of exhaustion. Eventually it'll get better, I hear some people still don't feel fantastic up until the 3 month mark but hopefully that won't happen.

I was very tired after surgery but it came back. What's weird is that I became very tired the last two weeks of May. I found that I had no energy. I started taking an extra multi vitimin, a B12, an Iron, along with my Calcium Citrate(all chewable, of course!). Now I am beginning to feel better. Hope this helps.

I'm about six wks post surgery. I still feel extremely tired all the time. It's driving me crazy. I also took several naps in days following surgery. I've been taking a Multi-Vitamin and Biotin. I hope it'll get better soon. You're definetly not alone.

I just had surgery on 5/28 and have also noticed that I need naps when I never did before. It is getting better, but still need to lie down after doing too much.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
