Putting things into perspective

Recommended Posts

Lately i've been getting down on myself because I finally hit the 50 lb mark (2 weeks ago) so I was so excited and I thought I would be down another 3-4 lbs by the time I went to the doctor again. I went to the doctor on 4/25 and again this morning 5/30. Well I've been down on myself because I didn't lose anymore weight after that and was getting frustrated.

I went to the doctor this morning and between my last visit and this visit I've lost 9 lbs.

9 lbs is alot of weight. Basically we should remember while we get down on ourselves week to week because we feel we should be losing more, we should look at the whole picture!!! Hope everyone has a good weekend!!!

Congratulations both on your weight loss and your attitude! I completely agree that sometimes we get too close to the situation and too scale-number-obsessed.

What I try to remind myself when I'm not losing as much or as quickly as I'd like, is that time passes no matter what. There's nothing we can do to slow it down or stop it. And if three weeks have passed, and I've only lost three pounds -- well, that's three pounds gone.

Have I been a good person during those three weeks? A good wife, friend, daughter, sister, doctor, coworker, caregiver? Have I had moments of happiness? Then that's a good three weeks. And even if that rate continued for a year, by this time next year I'd have lost 52 more pounds. I sure haven't done that any year recently.

A smart person at my WLS support group said, "The doctors do the stomach surgery, but you have to do the brain surgery." It certainly sounds like you're on the right track.

Good luck!

I so agree with you and the concept of WLS being as much if not more of brain rehabilitation. I find myself even after an 80 lb weight loss, almost talking myself into being able to eat more food. Your mind can really play tricks on you. I found when I start having a tough time, if you hold on to the wave and ride..it will pass. It takes practice to listen to your body. Thanks for the positive talk..It helps a lot!!:)

pretty cool. i have only lost a couple pounds in a couple weeks and have been fighting getting down about it. I am expecting like 3 a week or more. for now my fill is not restricting enough so i think this week will be good after they adjust.

your post is helpful. cant wieght to see 9 more pounds come off...I'll be relieved when I hit 225 which is only a few pounds a way but it will prove the band is still working and that i am still working it...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
