My dr's office requires my preop for 2 weeks prior all liquids. I am allowed 2 Protein Shakes a day and they want them to have 30 grams of Protein and no more than 7 grams of carbs per serving. Can anyone help with this? Thanks.

The 2 types of Protein Shakes that I use have 15, and 17 grams of Protein and one has 6 grams of carbs. and the other has 2 grams. If they want you to have ONE that has 30 grams of protein, you might have to add some unflavored protein to your shake. I think I would ask them what they recommend. Good luck to you. Becky

I use a brand called body fortress that I get from Walmart. I can't off hand remember the Protein grams but pretty sure it's around 30 grams. I buy the vanilla because it's versatile, I make mine with 1 cup milk, 1.5 scoops of Protein Powder, 1 tsp Peanut Butter, 1 tsp sugar free jell brand chocolate powder and crushed ice. I use my immersion (stick) blender and it's real yummy

If you stick with vanilla protein powder you have more mixing options such as different pudding flavors and fruit.< /p>

Having a shake with 30 grams is a lot in one. I take one from scratch with 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, 1/c cup of FF milk, some frozen fruit, 2 splenda and ice in the Magic Bullet. it comes out to 22 grams which I guess you could add some Protein whey powder and up the Protein. It's really interesting all the different variations of pre-op, anywhere from none at all to some that are horribly restrictive. I just have to get in 70 grams of protein a day but I can have SF Jello, SF pops and then a Soup and yogurt a day. So I do the Greek yogut at 17 grams of protein. But I will say doing this has helped psychologically for after surgery. Don't know how well I would have done to go from eating anything to absolutely nothing. So mentally I feel more prepared.

Good luck. Some days are easier than others.

I personally like the Now Foods powder...it's 100% whey isolate (vs. the concentrate which is not absorbed as well) and tastes pretty darn good. One scoop has 25g of Protein, which is the highest I've found in the whey isolate. You can get it at some health food and Vitamin stores, or online. To get over 30 in one shake (and keep it around your carb limit), mix it with 1/2 skim milk and 1/2 water/ice-cubes, and toss in a sprinkle of your favorite crystal light drink mix for flavor. Yum!

I like the unjury chocolate powder. I always use Water though because I don't like milk. One thing I've learned is that if you add an extra half of a scoop it makes it more chocolatey. Obviously, it also increases the Protein, so that's good. Some other advice I've heard, but haven't tried is that if you do use Unjury and like to add things, use vanilla as the base rather than the unflavored. Oh, I also like the Unjury because it doesn't have much of an aftertaste.

For the on-the-go shakes, I prefer the Atkins chocolate and Vanilla shakes. If you can't find it, the Pure Protein and EAS Low-Carb are also ok, but all the pre-made seem to have more of an aftertaste.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
