Banded today..some discomfort..HELP!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello Banders,

I was banded this morning and arrived home around 1:30 cst. Since then I have been very uncomfortable. I can sit and move around somewhat which minimizes the discomfort. I am concerned about getting a good night's rest. Did anyone have trouble sleeping? I am using a heating pad and am sipping on broth, cranberry juice and Water. I also took the prescribed liquid pain med without much change. Please tell me I will feel better soon. I do not want to regret having this done.

It's probably gas. They had to blow your stomach up to do the surgery. Mine was very painful for about 4 days. I took Gas X strips to help and then switched to Maalox to take the edge off. That mixed with heating pad and walking as much as tolerated will help you. Congrats on making the decision to do this!

Hello,

I am 14 days out. My doctor required a overnight stay. I walked alot in the hospital and took my pain medicine before the pain came. I have been pain free for over a week. Walking helps with the gas too.

Good Luck,

Donya

I was banded less than three weeks ago and I slept great the 1st night. Take the pain meds and know that you will pretty much be sleeping in one position...which will be your back. If the discomfort you are feeling is gas just be sure to walk a lot. I was very fortunate that I did not have any pain and slight gas discomfort but I walked all through my house for hours and it went away before bedtime. I did not have to take any pain meds after I got home from the surgery. Everyone's bodies are different...just follow your discharge orders and call your surgeon with any concerns. Try propping yourself up on the couch or bed with lots of pillows so that you are almost in a sitting position...medicate yourself...and relax. You did not make the wrong choice.....trust me...I have already lost 21 pounds and in a few weeks you will look back and think that it wasn't so bad. Good luck to you.

You all are so wonderful. I have tears in my eyes and it is not form the discomfort. The tears are because the people on this forum really stand by each other. Thank you for giving me advice and encouragement. I think I would be a basket case if it weren't for you all helping to calm me.

congrats on getting your band! the hard part is over! the gas-x strips will definitely help! i carry those with me everywhere now. getting up and walking will definitely help. i slept in a recliner for the first few days because a bed wasnt comfy...

definitely keep sipping the warm liquids because those will help.

remember, the pain is only temporary... soon, the pounds will be flying off and you will be so happy! trust me! im 2 months in and i still think my band is the best thing i could have done for myself. if you ever get down, definitely come on here and you will find a ton of support! hope we can stay in contact through our band journeys!

Thank you Jenny. I would love to stay in touch. I have a recliner in the bedroom. I thought that slepping in it would be a good idea. I'm glad it helped you. I will try it. If it is easier for you, I can be reached by email. ec4tutor@aol.com

Hi everyone, I followed the advice and started walking more around the house. My shoulder pain went away. I decided to make a cup of Celestial Seasoning Sleepytime Tea and took the prescribed pain meds along with the Gas-X. I am happy yo report I was able to get a decent amount of rest last nigt. I am ready to tackle day 2 post op.

Well you have the right attitude...just take it one day at a time....that is the best you can do. You will feel much better by the end of the weekend...just relax and don't expect too much of yourself. Good luck..and like someone said above...if you need support...come back here.

Hello Banders,

You will never regret it. I was banded on May 1st and went for my first fill yesterday and they didn't do it as I am loosing weight. Will see if needed in two weeks.

The pain in the shoulder is from the gas and should lesseon each day. sleep on two pillows NOT FLAT. I did not fine the heating pad to help..actually thought it made me feel worse. Walking around will help release the gas. You may have had a hiadus hernia fixed which gives a little more discomfort in the chest. It will also get better. Use GASX strips if you have them.

You'll be fine and on your way to a NEW YOU!

Hi svelt2009. I did have hernia repaired. That may explained the discomfort. I am tired today, but still trying to move around a little at a time. Can't drink as much as I was told. I do not want to get weak. I will return to work Monday. I teach and next week is the last week before school is out for the summer. I am scheduled to get the first fill on 6/16/09. Hoping for the sewlling to go down before Monday. I plan to relax and try and stay hydrated.

You'll feel better each day. Just a little linger pain in the shoulder from the gas. Just go easy and don't push yourself. Drink as much fluids as you can too and rest and walk.

swelling takes awhile to go down, but you are on your way.

Good luck on your last day of teaching for the year. You hae a great summer ahead of you!

I got through the 2nd night post op. If was a much easier night. I had Sleepytime Tea and prescribed pain meds along with my heating pad right before bed. I slept most of the night. I needed more pain meds by 3:30 am. I was able to sleep on my left side last night. The gas is making its way through my body. I've lost less than 2 pounds in 2 days. I'm not discouraged by that. I know in a mtter of weeks I will see more results.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
