No more broth!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

We went in for our 12 day post-op visit today and we are doing great. Dr. gave us the ok to start introducing puree/mushies today instead of waiting til the end of 3 weeks to do so. We are so excited because we could not stand the thought of broth for another week.

I've lost 10 lbs. since surgery and a total of 31 lbs. since pre-op diet. My sister has lost 7lbs since surgery and a total of 22 lbs. I just hope that we don't gain anything back once we start introducing foods again.

Our first fill is scheduled for June 30th. I guess we will just have to be careful with our choices until then.

Yay! How exciting to get off the broth!! Exciting food awaits you now! I didn't gain anything from my two weeks of pureed/mushy foods, but I only lost 1 pound. Most of us who got banded early in the month are now entering what is called "Bandster Hell," which from what I read, happens to nearly everyone. It's the period between your surgery and your first fill when your weight loss slows down to nothing, even though you're eating like a tiny bird and exercising. You both have done so well on your weight loss so far! Don't worry, you probably will be just fine with the addition of the pureed foods! Just keep up the exercise and the Water consumption. :crying:

I am on day 5 and the thought of broth makes me nauseous! SERIOUS! I am woozy at the sight of it! I have bad gas, sick to my stomach feelings. Sucking down gas-x strips, and feel light headed. Have dranken some juice to keep my blood sugar up but this is horrible! My body wants to keep burping which I know is a no-no. And my body wants to go into that hacking cough you get before you vomit!

Any recommendations, feel free... I am MISERABLE! 3 weeks of broth is going to be pure HELL!

Ann, thank you for the nice word words of encouragement. I hope, like you, that we get through this without gaining any weight. You were right today was great just being able to have blended black bean Soup, instead of broth.< /p>

All I can tell you is that I went through exactly the same. Like you I also had to drink apple juice at night because I was shaky and felt my blood sugars were low. My symptoms got better after about 5 days so hopefully you are on the end stage of your symptoms. The burping and cough is probably because you are hungry.

What really helped us is instead of using the store bought broth is we actually made large pots of chicken Soup or beef soup and strained it for the broth. Others in the family ate the soup with all the good stuff but at least the flavor of the broth from homemade soup was 100% better than the store bought ones. I also tried changing things up by asking my local chinese restaurant to make me won ton soup without all the ingredients same with french onion soup . As long as the broth is clear you can change it up a bit.

I hope this helps and that you start feeling better soon. Speak with your doctor at your post-op visit and maybe he will let you add some puree at 2 instead of 3 weeks, ours did. Please post and let me know how you are doing.

I actually threw up from the broth yesterday, called my doc, he gave me a suggestion..... 7 strawberries, 1 banana, 1/4 skim milk (or lite soy milk) drop of vanilla extract 4 ice cubes in a blender until thick/runny- Strain it (get the strawberry seeds out). And I'm drinking it now and it's heaven!!!!!!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
