blog about life post-surgery

Recommended Posts

hi everyone - i am new to this. but i just started a blog about my experiences since the surgery march 2nd, 2009.

i have not gotten far but i decided the experience is too unique not to write about. even if no one reads it - i want a record of this.

here is the first post Fat Grrrl Slim: choking and burping

i hope to also help people have realistic expectations. i cannot discourage anyone - the surgery is worth it. but there are ups and downs.

thank you - i have learned from the rest of this community.

so I have read the blog.. and i have a few comments..Just a question?? Have you told your Doctor that you are choking on your on saliva after a fill?? because you should have ZERO problems drinking after a fill. If you are it means your band is to tight and you could be causing damage by allowing it to stay that tight.. I have had 5 fills and never once i have I choked on Water or anything I drink for that matter.. My doctor puts you on a liquid diet for the day of this feel. this is strictly so your body can recover from the actual tightening of the band. and the second day he moves you to soft foods for 24 hours again to help you heal.. and finally on the 3rd day you can begin eating normal foods again. once filled you should be able to consume 1 full cup of food 3 times a day.. If you are unable to do all of this with ease I would SERIOUSLY considered speaking with your doctor about what you are experiencing.. The band is by no means an easy out, but you should not be comfortable. Yes there are times you may take to big of a bite and it may get stuck, but typically that is a mistake we and bandsters make by not chewing our food well enough.. Remember SMALL SMALL bites and chew chew chew.. then when you think you have chewed enough chew some more.. this tool is an amazing thing. we are lucky to have gotten in. Make sure you treat it right so it can treat you right.. Good luck on your journey and please discuss the problems you are having with your doctor..

I agree. You should be able to drink fluids with ease. Check with your doctor if the discomfort continues. YOur band may be too tight.

I think that starting a blog is great! I actually vlog my journey on youtube. It has definitely helped to keep me focused. If you have a moment check it out. My youtube name is 2livesmart. Good luck on your journey!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
