Anyone's Insurance NOT do Pre-Approvals? Help!

Recommended Posts

My doc called last week and said I'm ready to go b/c I have met all of the requirements. When I seemed surprised and asked it I was approved, I was told my insurance does not do preapprovals. Doc's office said not to worry about it b/c they went down the checklist, made some calls, and I am good to go. I made it clear I cannot pay for something like this, and they said they would never have taken me for a patient if they weren't sure insurance would pay. Anyone else not able to get preapproved - not b/c you don't qualify but b/c your insurance just doesn't do it?

Your doctor may be sure, but obviously you aren't. Call your insurance company first thing tomorrow and discuss their requirements for approval for LBS so that you KNOW for yourself.

My insurance, also, did not do pre approvals. My doctor's office said I met all the necessary requirements, but 4 days before my surgery date, I was denied. Of course, you can appeal but that would take a minimum of 30 days.

My BMI was right at 40, but my 2 year history, was below 40. Even though I had high blood pressure, it was controlled by drugs, so that is why I was denied.

Of course, the doctor's office said they were not responsible, since the insurance is between me and them.

Call the insurance company and go over with them, their requirements. It will save you grief, in the long run.

be weary.. your doctors office may be 'sure', but when you sign the paper at the hospital, you are also undertaking to pay anything not covered by the insurance...

be cautious. i am a 'self pay', and it is a lot of money [my daughter is still pissed that i spent 'her car money'] .. just kidding, she is not...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
