Is something wrong with my band?

Recommended Posts

I am 12 days out from banding and starting 2 days ago I have been getting heartburn. I had tried to drink some veggie juice yesterday and the day before that. Thats when this all started. I had also been putting a little lemon juice in my Water. Just a few times.

Now I am getting heartburn . I was a tums taker before banding but I have not needed any since I started the pre-op diet.

Is there something wrong with my band or is this normal...

Help!..

Amy

Step away from the V-8!!

Seriously, some people do fine on it, but it was way way too acidic for me. I didn't do well on it at all. Stop the veggie juice, stay off the lemon for now, no tomatos or Tomato Soup, and get something like the chewable Pepcid AC, or Tums should work for immediate relief. My doc said take Prilosec. I said "but the pharmacist said it's 24 hour sustained release and don't crush it" and he said "crush it twice a day" and it helped alot.

It's not particularly normal, but it happens to many of us. Watch your acidic foods intake for a while and sloooowww down. My irritated stoma ended up PBing some Jello, and it was just downhill from there...hospital IV fluids, super super tight with swelling. Talk about buyers remorse! I wanted to give my band back for a few days there!

Good luck. Keep us posted!!

Thanks Kathy,

I am just so scared that this will all go wrong somehow....

Could it be that Iam eating too fast too?

I have noticed that as I get more hungry I drink my liquids a bit faster than I should..

There is nothing wrong with your band, first of all. Second of all, you're in the stage where LOTS of people start to worry and fret because their appetites have returned. It's NORMAL!!! If you're still on the post-op diet of liquids or mushies, in my opinion it's very important not to let yourself get too hungry. Go ahead and drink ALL the time, if that's what you need to stay satisfied. Don't worry about calories, this time is not about weight loss! It's about healing and making sure you don't stress your stomach too early.

Liquids cannot damage your band's placement, so just don't worry about that at all. There is a world of Soup for you to discover, and there is no reason at all to be hungry. Acidic things can absolutely cause heartburn, so just steer clear. You're doing just fine!! :)

Yes! and Alexandra's advice is right on the money (as usual). Carefully re-read everything she said. Then read it again. You are doing great!!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

I actually have not had the burn today at all. I slowed down and have had no

acidic anything..

I did have some crakers with my Soup. and it made me feel great. I know I should not have done it but I really thought that maybe my tummy was trying to tell me that it needed something Of substance to digest..

It really seemed to help..

Thanks again for the advice and encouragement you guys are great!

I'm glad you are feeling better today. My understanding is that we are not suppose to have any thing acidic until we have healed. Orange juice, lemon, lime, etc.. Each persons body will tolerate various things diffently.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
