Bowel movements---gross I know!

Recommended Posts

Ok so my post op paperwork says to take a laxative 3 tabs orally if no bm for 2 days after surgery. Well my mom got me those, but I am scared to try taking them, because I haven't had any pills unless they are crushed, and you can't crush these. I'm hesitant to call my doc to see if it's ok, because I've already called a couple of times about other stuff. Did anyone have to take laxatives to go to the bathroom? If so, is it ok to swallow them whole? Thanks.

The rule of thumb my doctor told me is if it is smaller than your pinky finger nail - then it is fine to take. Your REAL finger nail - I wear fake nails so my doc got a good laugh out of that.

You could always try milk of magnesia - just make sure to get the kind without sorbitol. It works the same as the pills.

Hi there. I was banded on the 18th and have the same problem... I used milk of magnesia... you know I have been thinking about it and think that it has to have something to do with lack of food. Because all the milk of mag did for me was give me dirreah for two days. Maybe there are no bm's b/c there is no real food intake. I don't know... Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I was banded on May 21st and still haven't had a BM. So I was thinking the same thing. I don't know if it's because of lack of food. I took a laxative, per doctors orders, the day before surgery and cleaned myself out. I'm curious if I just don't have BM because I have not had any food.....Let me know if you take the pills.< /p>

I take pills with no problem and have pretty good restriction. Why not just try 1 and see? I take a potassium pill that's pretty darned big and it goes down. Plus my surgeon gave me pain PILLS for post op!

You can call your doc to be sure but I think you'll be ok.

I had the same problem post op. I now use Benefiber in my morning Protein Shake to keep me regular. There are 2 actual things that are making you irregular. 1 is that your food intake has been greatly reduced, and 2 is the high Protein diet. My doc suggested the Benefiber (no taste, no grittiness and you can mix it with anything) and Jello (I doubted the jello, but it really seems to help).

I was banded on the 14th. I took ONE ex-lax (I didn't want to put too much burden on my stitches). It went down fine. I take a blood pressure pill that is as long as two of those pills. Dr. said I'd have no trouble with that long pill and he was right. Anyway, the one ex-lax was perfect. Made me feel much better.:wink2:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
