How much is too much liquid?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My surgery is on 5/28/09. I have been reading through my booklets and preparing for the weeks after surgery. I am confused about how much to drink in the first few weeks after. I do not want to throw up because I am having too much broth or Water. I am 5'4" 201 pounds. Can someone give me any advice?

I was banded yesterday and I can ony have a few tiny sips at a time and they want me to drink 32oz a day the first couple of weeks. Right know i can not even get through a half of a 9oz bottle. If you have any questions just ask. Good Luc!!!

you do not have to drink 64oz. right now you will be healing your broth an other Clear Liquids intake counts. as long as you sip through out the day an not become dehydrated. you will be fine.

I'm sure others will disagree, but I don't think there is such a thing as too much when it comes to Water and other low cal beverages. I guess the thing you might want to watch with the broth is sodium. Also, right after surgery, you probably won't want to, or feel like, chugging large quanities of anything.... but, the more you can drink the better I say. I did notice right after my surgery that warm drinks went down easier than really cold ones. Good luck to you!!! Becky

Thanks to eveyone who replied. I appreciate any and all advice. I am getting a little anxious as the days go by. I have heard horror stories about throwing up days after the band. I was told I could damage the band and not heal properly if I drink too much. The responder from Katy, please stay in touch. I would like to know how you are progressing. I would love it if we compare notes. The same invitation goes out to anyone who is willing to share your advice.

Hi Castle,

How are you feeling today? Were you able to drink a litle more and keep it down?

I was told I could damage the band and not heal properly if I drink too much.

I don't believe this. liquid goes right through the band.

What gets people in trouble is cheating on the liquid diet by eating solid food. This does lead to throwing up sometimes, but a lot of times nothing happens outwardly, but inwardly the stomach doesn't heal around the band properly and down the road you get slippage or other problems.

Thank you Madame! By the way, congratulations! It appears that you have reached your goal weight. I pray that I can be just as successful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
