Psychological Evaluation For BCBS?

Recommended Posts

Okay so I have BCBS of IL. and I wanted to know if anyone has gone through the the psychological evaluation yet. Can anyone tell me what it entails? Was anyone on antidepressants? Has anyone ever been denied because of it?

Not sure if BCBS requires a special type of evaulation, my surgeon requires the same evaluation for all his patients.

Mine was two visits, the first one to take the psych evaluation test. Mine was something like 900 yes/no questions, it was very boring and had statements like "I love my Mom" "I want to be a fireman". I was told to read each question carefully and answer honestly because the results would show if I did not and I could fail.

The second visit was to go over the results of the test, she was able to describe my personality pretty well based on the test results. She also verbally quizzed me on my knowledge of the Lap Band to make sure I knew what I was getting myself into. We discussed my schedule and eating habits and what kind of support I would have from those around me.

The whole process is in place to make sure that you know what the Lap Band is all about and you are mentally prepared to do what it takes to make it work. Simply being on anti-depressants shouldn't cause you to be denied.

Good Luck!

My eval was like Jodi's, except I only had 1 visit and went over the results after the test. My doctor required it from all his patients also. My insurance required it too, but I don't think there are any required tests.

I have heard that some people have to have consuling after the eval before the Dr will proceed, but I think that is a very small percentage.

I also have BCBS of IL and had the psych eval as required. It really just involved a consultation and a "personality" test. I was not on antidepressants at the time, but had previously been on Paxil and I told the psychologist that. After going over my psych testing with me, she wrote a recommendation for surgery and that was that! Just be open and honest about why you want the surgery and make it clear that you don't expect miracles. I think most psychologists will approve or recommend the surgery. It's just one of the hoops the insurance company makes you go through. I did everything BCBS of IL told me to do and had no problem getting the surgery approved. I'm having the Lap Band on June 1. Good Luck!

I have the same insurance ... are you having to do the 6 month Dr supervised diet, too? I am so frustrated!

Yup I had to do the 6 month Dr.'s supervised diet. I just finished and am waiting to hear back to see if I was approved for surgery. The 6 month wait was not as bad for me but the waiting for a response is hell!! Hang in there. :bored:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
