Need to "add" 25 lbs to reach 40 BMI, any ideas?

Recommended Posts

I only need to add 25 pounds to reach my BMI of 40 and I will be totally approved by my insurance. I'm only geting bigger and bigger each year and I want the surgery. Does anyone have any tips to "add" on the weight (and I dont mean gaining it). I found an 8 pound outfit I can wear for weigh in, but I still need to come up with at least 20-25 extra pounds and I only have 3 weeks. I know there has to be some ways to wear it on please help me!!!!!!!

Also do they round up or down on height? I am 5' 41/2 , will they use 5'4" or 5'3" ??

That is a large amount of wt to gain in 3 wks. Are you sure it's worth it? Especially if you have never weighed that much before?

Hi there,

25 pounds does seem like an awful lot to have to gain. I understand though because at my first weigh in I was told that add atleast 5 pounds would not hurt in my attempt to get approved. So for me those little 5 pounds was nothing to add. A couple of slices of pizza here and a few cupcakes there and wala!! 5 easy pounds.

With adding 25 pounds I have to agree is that really worth it. You have to decide if you really want the band that bad. Mind you, I am very happy so far with it and I am only 3 weeks out.

I had to gain weight for the surgery as well. It wasn't 25 pounds, more like 10 but it wasn't hard once I got going. I was weighed in right before surgery with only my gown on. I was told by my doctor's office that if my BMI was below 40 on the day of surgery that it can be canceled. The surgeon's ethically (and for insurance purposes) cannot perform the lapband procedure if your BMI is under. Make sure this is something you really want before adding on that extra weight.

If your BMI is above 35 and below 40 and you have co-morbidities, you can often times qualify for the surgery. At the rate I am going on my pre-op, I may be down to a BMI of 35 or less. I have high cholesterol. I am hoping that will count as a comorbidity and I will be approved by the insurance company.

Also, from what I have researched, the qualification process is typically based on your BMI on your first weigh in w/ the surgeon, not your weight on surgery day.

Drink lots and lots of Water before weigh-in. Also, keep your purse on your shoulder and your shoes on.

Gaining 25 pounds to have weight loss surgery is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Why would you want to put your body through this?

All I can say is that I did ankle weights and BB's in my bra. Added the twelve pounds I needed. Drink lots of Water and eat big for the next three weeks and right before the appt. I wore baggy LAYERS of clothes and put a bottle of water in the pocket of my sweater...it adds a pound! Good luck!

It is stupid that we have to *gain* weight in order to loose it.....I'd rather gain the weight in ways other then actual fat on my body!

What are BB's? They didn't check your ankles or anything for swelling....I'm going to buy bigger clothes so I can layer...that way what every weight stuff I'm hiding...it's not so obvious (this is so sad..lol...) def. the ankle weights....water bottle is good...wonder if I could wear a weight belt...maybe low enough around my hips that if the Dr. wants to see my belly it won't be seen....

"It's 105 degrees outside...why are you wearing sweat pants??"

I didnt say I wanted to gain all the 25 pounds. I was just hoping maybe clothes etc. might add on some extra weight for me. I dont have $15,000 to pay for my own surgery so I need to be at a 40 BMI. I'm sick of being fat!!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
