Am I too fat for the band?

Recommended Posts

I'm worried that the band may not be restrictive enough and that I'm too fat for it.

I'm a bloater and feel that if I have something that can help me to stop eating as much, then I can begin to work out and become healthy.

Any suggestions/opinions?

I don't know what "I'm a bloater" means but this is probably something you could discuss with a surgeon who does lap band AND other surgeries. I weighed 405 when I got my band and I love it.

I'm sorry, I thought all surgeon's use that term. It means I like to eat meals. Not a snacker or sweets person, I like meat.

LOL

I'm afraid that I will fail, but I know that I will die if I don't try something.

Thanks for responding; I need the support. Everyone is giving me their .2, and I know they love me but they don't understand.

I've seen many succuess stories on people over 400lbs. I am 370ish and going to be banded next week. My dr. said that in Australia, they wouldn't do a lap band on me,but he's confident that this is THE tool i need to succeed. (P.S. I have no idea what Australia has to do with it...lol,other than they've been banding longer)..

Liking meat is a good thing with the band. Bandster rules are Protein first, then veggies/fruits then complex carbs. It will just let you eat less. You will get fuller much faster. I was 313 lbs at the start of my journey now I'm down to 263 and it's only been 3 1/2 months.

My surgery is scheduled on June 1st and I'm a little nervous about my liver being "too thick." RestlessMonkey, I noticed that you had that problem and I'm wondering what you did differently the second time. As excited as I am, I'm having a really hard time with this pre-op diet. I certainly don't want to set myself up for failure!!

I started my pre op diet at 373 and on surgery day March 24th, I was 344.

I am now 317 and I was due for my first fill last week and my surgeon and I decided that I did not need a fill yet.

I am eating small portions and staying satisfied up to 5hrs, I go in again in a month to re evaluate.

So, it's just my opinion but I say go for it!!!!

Thanks Susanhol, it's been hard work but so worth it... I have spent too many years talking about how miserable I am, it's time to get off my couch and make a lifestyle change.

Do your best to stay on track on the preop diet, not just for the shrinking of the liver but to get your body use to healthy foods, sugary, fried and large amounts will not be allowed while you are healing so prepare yourself now. After surgery you will be on a post op diet and once the swelling goes down you may have temptations...getting a head start never hurts.

Good luck and feel free to write anytime, I look forward to your progress.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
