Rate of weight loss question

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the previous advice on talking with spouse, it was helpful!

I am wondering what is the rate of speed (ball park as I know everyone is different) that you start losing once you are banded.

I want to make sure my expectations are in-line. I have read tons of posts but now, I have almost confused myself.

Do you lose starting from Surgery to the first fill? Or does the weight loss not really start until the 3rd or 4th fill and are the fills done monthly or every 6 wks or does that depend on the doctor?

Again trying to nail down what to expect.

Thanks in advance you guys are great!!!

Misty

Weight loss is pretty good immediately after surgery because you'll be on liquids. You'll also lose for the few weeks before surgery if your doc puts you on a pre-op diet.

The tough part is after liquids phase is over and you're in limbo until you get restriction. During that time, you're pretty much on sole willpower. At least that's how it is for most people, although some people report restriction without a fill. Everyone's different. Generally, however, your weight loss will slow until you get filled to restriction.

How often you get a fill will depend on the doctor. Some make you wait 6 weeks, others 4. After your first fill, a lot of doctors will do a re-fill in just a couple of weeks.

It is realistic to expect 1-2 lbs per week once you have restriction. Restriction takes a few fills for most people. I was lucky enough to have restriction from surgery, so I lost continually for the first 6 months. Since then I have hit 2 plateaus, but still have adequate restriction, so I just need to exercise.

My experience has also been 1 or 2 pounds a week since restriction. I am happy with that. I still find myself wanting to have a bite of this and a bite of that and the band doesn't stop every habit. So be prepared for that and have some strategies to combat Snacks.

I have a dumb question. How do you get the weight loss ticker to show on this site? I set one up on the ticker factory, but couldn't get it over onto my page.

When you get to the last page after creating the ticker, copy the code ( I think it is the first one at the bottom) for forums. Then, paste it in your edit signature box; preview the signature and it should be there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
