Blood Clot history

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I have a history of blood clots on my legs, I am so scared that this can prevent me from having a surgery. Has anybody been in this situation.:sad:

I was given an injection of blood thinner just before surgery and was sent home wearing compression socks. I suggest you talk to the doctor who has been caring for you related to the blood clot issue.

I don't think it will prevent your surgery. There are steps they can take beyond the standard precautions of "ted" hose, lovenox or heparin, etc...precautions they can take, as well as drugs they can give you (they may even go so far as to have you give yourself injections of a blood thinner for a few days or so!) Just be honest with your doctor and I'm sure you'll be fine!

My friend had Gastric Bypass about two years ago and had a blood clot disorder. Before surgery they implanted this little "thing"(they described it as a metal spider) in a vein in her neck that would break up any clots she may have. A couple weeks after surgery they removed it - she had no problems. Good Luck!

This should not keep you from being able to have surgery. I also have a history of blood clots. I have Factor V and am now on lifetime maintenance coumadin. I was given a shot of Lovenox before surgery and compression "boots" for several hours after. No problems at all. Remember to get up and walk as often as possible once you get home.

I've had a PE following other surgery so my surgeon asked my haematologist for guidelines pre and post surgery and I was fine. I was on blood thinning injections (clexane) for about two weeks post surgery - these are injections I give myself and I also give them when flying so they are no biggie

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
