How do you deal with extra skin after the band?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys!

I am hoping to get banded in July 2009  and was wondering about the extra skin that may be there once I lose the weight. My surgeon said that because I am still fairly young, my skin still has elasticity in it and should conform to my "new body" fairly well. So I guess my question is whether there is anything that I can do to aid in my skin "re-shaping" itself once I have the band. Should I wear a full body girdle, corset, etc? Also if you know of something that helps to fade stretch marks I would love to know about that too. Thanks for helping!

Not sure about the girdle part and everything but theres a product available here in aus called bio-oil, it helps reduce scarring and stretch marks, I use it after every surgery I've had and have only just started putting it on my band scars and it's definitely helping. This is the website.

Then just click where you shop and it'll come up! Good luck

Alot of it depends on how much you need to lose. You did not specify that. Naturally a person needing to lose 50 pounds would have less loose skin issues then a person needing to lose 150. Age and exercising also are major factors.

I need to lose like 120lbs. You lost quite a bit, CONGRATS! What did you do about it? I plan on exercising and weight training. I am by no means looking to get a six pack, just would like to tone as much as possible. I know that there will be some degree of excess skin, but I would like to re-shape as much as possible without getting plastic surgery. Thanks!

Hey so-sweet,

I am 29 and started at 327 pounds. I get annoyed when people tell me that bc I am younger, I wont have as much extra skin. I am not sure where they get this information from. Take my stomach for example. My stomach has stretch marks. A stretch mark is rip in the skin. My skin is torn. If I lose enough weight, I will...without a doubt...have saggy skin there. It cannot go back to how my stomach looked when I was 14 and pre-stretch mark. Other places on my body (and yours) that is stretch mark free, does have a better chance of tightening up than say someone is who 50.

I would love to be wrong! LOL...if i wake up a year from now with no excess skin I will let you know

But, I can deal with all of that when the time comes. Right now I am working the band, focusing on my WL first!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
