Heartburn when going to soft foods

Recommended Posts

So about a week after my surgery I was put on soft foods. They went down just fine, in fact now I'm 2 weeks out with little restriction at all. The problem is, for the first week after I started eating soft foods I was getting pretty bad heartburn. It actually took me a few days to figure out what it was because I had never even had heartburn in my life before this. For the last couple of days it has gone away and I'm hoping I'm in the clear.

I can imagine after eating nothing but protien shakes for 2 weeks that solid foods can be a bit of a shock to the system. I guess my question is, is this normal or could there have been something else wrong like band slippage?

Can you say what you are eating? Could this be causing your heartburn? You should slowly try flavoring your foods. It is a trial and error thing in the beginning. I heard others can't eating eat spicy foods now. I don't think you should worry about slippage at this time. Allow your body to recover from the foreign object in your system and treat it like a baby. Stick with non acidic foods at this time right now.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
