acid reflux at night...is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

ive just had my band tightened and since its been done ive been suffering from continual reflux at night. once it starts it really is nonstop and im coughing and clearing my throat all night ( think its acid reflux, its def not sliming, food, or PBing). Im getting no sleep and its wearing me down.

has anyone else had this and if so how did you remedy it? its literally just started and ive had my band nearly a year.

i think im gonna have an emergency unfill but before i do i thought it wouod be good to get some feedback from the forum

Thanks everyone

Julia

Your thinking on the right track. You need an unfill, as soon as you can get one. It's not healthy to leave that much fill in there if it is causing those kind of problems.

You really must immediately see your doctor, get an esophogram, and get an unfill. Reflux and night coughs are very symptomatic of a slip, so if it hasn't slipped yet, it's time to remedy the situation before it's too late and you're back in surgery...that's what happened to me.

Good luck!

I also suffered with reflux at night following a fill. (The fill was only .5 cc). I could not sleep and found myself coughing and spitting up all night.

I ended up back at the doctor's office where he removed only a quarter of the cc he previously put in. What a difference it made!

Check with your doctor about an unfill, if only a tiny amount, makes a difference!

Julia,

Call your Dr and get a bit unfilled right away. If the banded area gets inflammed from being too tight you will require a total unfill. YOU DONT WANT THAT. Do it today.

Reflux is a very common symptom of being too tight. In your case, since it started immediately after a fill, I'd say you need to go back to your doctor for a slight unfill. Sometimes as little asa .2cc removed can make a huge difference.

You need a tiny unfill . . . I had the same problem. I did try drugs to combat it, sleeping semi upright, no eating several hours before bed, etc. All of these things just made small improvements, but a small unfill eliminated it completely.

I have had a similar problem also a year or so post op. I got an slight unfill and was better for a week or two and then it came right back, and I have been vomiting/sliming alot, 1-3 day. I assume I need more out. My nurse did not think I had a slip since I did not have chest pain.....

Hi Juliatabor. I went through exactly what you are going through about one month ago. It started about 10 days after a fill. I'd had my band about one year when this started. More than likely you are getting that acid reflux. It was waking me up all night and I couldn't stop coughing. It was horrible. There are a few threads concerning this problem. I think they are located in the lap band fills section. Anyway, it is now gone after I had a slight unfill. It took about a week before the choking and coughing completely disappeared. Go see your doctor. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
