Favorite foods you are missing or think you will miss...

Linda, I'm doing my pre-op right now, so I can't have anything spicy, since it's not part of my doc's very restrictive choices.

I might be able to have it again once I'm banded, at least I hope so!

But right now... I'm really missing it!

Falafal is HEAVEN IN PITA BREAD!!!!!!- Usually Ground chickpeas and seasoning, Rolled into balls and deep fried, Served in a warm pita, with Hummis, Israeli salad (tomato, cucumber, onion, garlic parsley) topped with Sourkraut & Pickles. Making my mouth Water just thinking about it. Messy as hell but you'll be addicted at the last bite.

Yeah I'm boardering a 14/16. I'm only 4'11, but I weigh 205, and I have severe hip Arthritis, so I wobble & limp, and it looks like in a good gust of wind I'll just fall over and start rolling... lol... It's very hard being this weight Joint wise for me, so I spend more time in agony then I do excercising.

I realize rice may be out altogether, so between that probability and avoiding bigger sized bites, I think sushi rolls will be out.

Also, Chinese food - I love special fried rice and that will be out. Thai noodle dishes.

I would strangle someone for pad thai at this moment lmao.:laugh:

Diet Coke here..............been banded five weeks today and no more soda. I lived on Diet Coke for years.............I am surviving and hope wanting a coke will fade out here soon!!

Ah and Falafels are to die for!!! I have to wonder if they were baked instead of fried if that would be band friendly??

So here are my suggestions to have the same things but in the way we can it it.. Don't deprive your self just find a way.

Here's the list of items mentioned:

-pizza, cheese/mushroom You can eat the cheese and pepperoni off the slices. just minus the bread

-spaghetti, plain, chicken alfredo, chicken parm, noodles with butter and garlic...mmmmm You can eat the chicken and sauce and have some steemed veggies on the side, just minus the Pasta

-SWEETS, I love Cookies, chocolate, ice cream, candy- make your self some SF pudding with SF(light) coolwhip or SF Jello with Light Coolwhip, have SF candies, Cookies and treats sparingly.

-Chinese foods, I have always loved chicken fried rice and PB chicken. just avoid the rice and fried items, but eat the chicken and veggies.

-Buttery popcorn, movie theatre popcorn is the best!This one is a NO NO so yeah it will be missed..

-Hot Dogs and cheddarwurst! You can have hotdogs just cut them up small and chew chew chew,

-BREAD...mmmmm This one is also a NO NO and will be missed

you know If I keep telling my self that I am deprived of items then it makes life much much harder. so I have found that if I find a way I can enjoy something my family eats and adjust it for my needs it makes life much much better. I make sure that when I am cooking for my family I make dinners that I can still eat. for example...

I made Beef stroganoff last night for the family.

I used Canned Turkey in stead of beef, (they didnt know any better)

I chopped up an onion

used fat free sourcream and freash mushrooms and skim milk.

with fresh garlic and then they had the egg noodles.

I made some green Beans to go with it and also a salad for the family.

I had my small portion of the meat sauce with green Beans and they ate the rest. It was perfect. but I am also 2 weeks out and am on canned meats and mushies so I just mushed up everything really well and chewed chewed chewed. Just think in positive ways and life can be easier then we think.

here here on the coke thing. I wonder too, but with the falafal. I don't think it would be the same, and that would require diy.. instead of hitting your fav place

omg, so true!

although, i gave up sodas several years ago, and i'm happy to say that now the idea of drinking one makes me kinda gag!

and i've never had too much of a sweet tooth.

but it's all those lovely foods.... rich, cheesy, creamy, spicy, carb-LADEN foods!!

we like our comfort foods here in the south, and it's going to be HAAAAAARD to give up most of those things, especially when most of our social activities are built around food!

Hello

I have had my band for almost 6 months and apart from the liquids/mushy stage etc i still eat whatever i like (that agrees with my band) including bread, Pasta and rice etc only in very small amounts and of course not all the time. Thin people eat like normal people and thats how i want to live my life, a balanced diet and a healthy approach to excerise i think is the key to not obsessing about what you eat all the time. Of course different approaches work for different people but i just thought i would share my story!

That's awesome that you are able to eat whatever you want!

I hope that at some point I'll be able to do the same...

but I know that I have a harder time saying no to less healthy foods AFTER I've started eating them, than if I just don't eat them at all.

Someday maybe I'll get to the point where I'm satisfied with just one bite of the fried macaroni and cheese. In the meantime, it's just off the list until I can control it better! :eek:

It definately depaends on the person, i am lucky that i dont have a sweet tooth, so the choc and Cookies etc never bother me but savoury stuff like bread etc i lived on before the band. Now it takes me ages to eat bread so i am satisfied after a small amount. Because it takes longer to eat and you have to chew chew chew it losses its appeal so much which i believe is better than cutting it out. Trust me there are still things that my band hates and i would love to have like sausages, lamb, chicken takes ages etc but i occassionally try small amounts to see if it will go and if it doesnt then i keep clear for a while.

When i first got banded i cut out all of things apart from what was listed on my Drs advice but over time you have to figure out a way of life that works best for you and if that is to continue to not eat certain foods then fine. I am 25 and i didnt want to stop going out and having the occasional drink and enjoy nice meals out etc. However i do understand that for some people it is better to remain on a strict routine.

of course, this really is the ideal time for me to learn to love the foods that are better for me, anyway. :eek:

and maybe even cook at home more often! save money! lose weight! be healthier! live longer!!

yeah, those kind of thoughts make me not miss those foods quite as much after all...

Pasta, pizza, potatoes, pecan pie, garlic bread, really all kinds of bread, waffels, homemade mac n cheese. I am not too bad on sweets but there are certain foods I love. So I am hoping I will be able to occasionally have some of the above foods.

What I wont miss, knees that hurt, back that hurts, having to get shots in my knee every 5-6 mos just so I can walk, airplane seats, airplane bathrooms, rv bathrooms, booths in restaurants, lane bryant & avenue LOL, being considered morbidly obese or even obese, being able to get up from the floor without the aid of a fork lift LOL, so I try to think of those things as I am missing some of the above. My surgery is next week, I am down 13 lbs on preop diet and allready can tell the different in the worst of my knees...

macaroni and cheese is my ALL-TIME favorite food. I'm gonna miss it a lot. In fact, I already miss it! I miss Taco Bell too...mmm. Luckily, I have developed a love affair with grilled chicken and steamed broccoli!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
