Clear Liquid Diet Question

Recommended Posts

I have a question for any of you that have done this before. My doctor wants me on a clear liquid diet the day before the surgery. I assumed that meant ginger ale, Water, broth, etc.

The paperwork that the hospital gave me has a diet plan to be used after the surgery, and it says that the clear liquid diet is to include Jello and Protein Shakes. The hospital is the one that the doctor will be using, and I keep forgetting to call the doctors office when I get off work.

So, do any of you know, what exactly is a clear liquid diet? What type of beverages and/or foods did you use during that time?

How long did your doctor keep you on the clear liquid diet after the surgery?

Thanks for all your help

I was able to have broth, tea, Water, sugar free Jello, Special K Protein water (available at walmart), & Isopure (available at GNC) for the first 2 weeks after surgery then was allowed to have Protein Shakes and cream Soups. Try to focus on the protein, very important.

Best of luck to you.

I'm afraid I wasn't very clear when I answered your question. Clear Liquids are anything you can see through. My plan had me wait until week 3 to start on Protein Shakes & cream Soups.< /p>

i am on the pre-op diet and have to be on clear liquids 2 days prior to surgery. Call your doctor with these kinds of questions. Not all doctors have you do the same things. Believe me, they would rather hear from you before you possibly do the wrong thing.

Best of luck

Preop clear liquids generally mean anything you can see through....tea, coffee, Jello, Water, clear broth. Not Protein Shakes. You can have grape juice. I'd avoid the Protein shakes (including isopure) because they have nutrition and you don't really want that now! (husband's an RN; I just clarified with him)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
