No alcoholic? But will I ever have beer again?

Recommended Posts

I am sure my relationship with beer will change as I won’t quite have the space to put away much of the substance and that is okay. I already cut my consumption way back the last time I started packing on more pounds. I just couldn’t afford the calories. I wonder though, since beer feels so giant in your stomach will I be able to have it once I am in the groove with my band? One beer? Two beers? I figured a glass of wine would still be safe, but beer had me perplexed? Anyone out there have experience here? Thanks!

I've had a couple and it just was not good anymore. The doctor said not to drink ANY because it can cause erosion of your band. I think if you had an occasional beer it would be ok. I have pretty much given it up altogether.

I'm the same way Nana~. But I find that 'rita's shut down my band... must the be frozen part. I don't drink ice cream milk shakes any more so it might be the cold.

I know that I shouldn't have, but I had a beer last nite while sitting out on the patio, watching the moon and stars...............The beer sucked! It was too filling! I'm not evened filled yet, and it didn't agree with me! I guess next time I want to relax...I'll have to have some straight tequila!icon10.gif

I've tried a beer now and again, I've had times where a couple went down ok, and other times a single drink of beer causes a distinct discomfort. I'm not a big drinker, but do find that the icy cold / slushy drinks go down very well, unless they are made from thick Syrup. I don't do well with popsicles, but love mr. misty's and moolatte's from DQ... so I have to make a supreme effort to avoid them.

Well, if you do a search on beer - you will see a lot of threads from me pre-banded. Beer was my very favorite! I was scared about the thought of having to give it up forever.

Well, now it has been 3 1/2 months and I really don't miss it. Ya, I think about it sometimes, but it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I talked to my Dr. a lot about drinking, he didn't have a problem with it in moderation. Carbonation is the big issue - not really errosion unless you have too many, too often.

hope this helps.

That was the first question asked of the surgeon at my Information Evening. He laughed and assured us that drinking alcohol (beer included) would be fine in moderation. Course he didn't tell us to go on a drinking binge LOL, but I've not had any problems with the occassional few glasses of drink.

Different doctors seem to have different opinions on what causes slippage and erosion. As someone who has a doc that never said anything about alcohol causing problems, I do have beer every now and then. Some days, I'm too tight and the bubbles are uncomfortable, other days it works okay. It does fill you up, because after a certain amount of time not eating much, your stomach does shrink back to normal size, so a beer is going to fill you up for a while.

liquid calories, blah blah blah, I try and avoid drinking on a regular basis, and keep it for special occasions, but yeah, I still drink beer and other things. :(

I'm getting the distinct impression that surgeons here are more relaxed with those kinds of rules because all the information I've gathered "locally" seems to indicate that you will be able to eat and drink totally normally, just in more moderate amounts. Maybe its because they've been doing banding so much longer in Australia.

Beer just about explodes my tummy anyway, I drink very little of it and never having it again wouldnt be a problem to me. When it comes to alcohol I'm a wine drinker and virtually have nothing else apart from an occasional Drambui. I dont drink soft drink either.

I have a friend who was banded in about 1995 - just an acquaintance that Doug used to work with and she used to decide whether to drink or eat when we went out - she couldnt fit both in, but when she chose to drink she had no problem with beer.

I think if I can have one, I should be good. Just something to sip on. It’s such a lifestyle thing for me. It’s the norm for me and the BF and EVERYONE around me. Not to advertise here, but just for an example, my band’s (of the rock sort, not tummy) name is even BrotherLush. That should tell you something. I won’t miss the buzz, or any of the nasty effects alcohol can have on a person, but it is very social and such a way of life for us. Anyway, I just have to make up my mind that this is not an acceptable obstacle. I will just add it to the list of things I have decided will not get in my way. Thanks guys.

I was just banded 8/25 and I'm right there with ya on the drinkin'. BUT, my Dr (also Ortiz) said no beer cuz of the carbonation, so I'm going to stay clear and drink my cosmo's instead :D With all alchohol we just have to be careful of the consumption of calories - the liquid calories kill - and I personally have noticed I get buzzed a little quicker than I used to pre-band (whoo-hoo, saving $ is a bonus...) :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
