Pre-Op on monday--2nd thoughts

Recommended Posts

After a year of waiting I got the call --a reminder for my pre-op visit on monday then surgery scheduled June 1st!!

I thought it was July.

I had been having second thoughts since I had lost 50 lbs since september dieting & excersising--thinking maybe this time I will do it all the way and not need the surgery?

Though I have hit a platuea since december!

Sometimes I think I am giving up on God's work on me by getting the surgery.. Seems like giving up on faith and discipline, grace and prayer etc. I am not worried about the procedure, I am not worried about recovery, I am not worried about following the rigorous program---this due to the excellent program at the hospital. I struggle the most with feelings that I am giving up on what God is trying to change in my character.

But at the same time--I have been struggling with this problem as a christian for 23 years. Done it all---OA, First Place, Grace Shamblins study--and have even lead groups in all 3.

Not to mention the weight watchers, nutrisystems, Atkins etc.

Like the word says--"If your eye causes you to sin, gouge out your eye"

In this case fourtunately I will simply be getting a band installed and following a tough regime????----better than cutting out the stomach. Not that the aforementioned verse is to be taken litterally.

any thoughts?

Wow - that is some heavy stuff you are putting yourself through. First I want you to think a bit differently, this does not have to do with willpower or discipline, it has to do with obesity which is a disease and often is caused by many more factors than overeating. It runs in families, there are chemicals and hormones involved that make it impossible for 95% of the people who lose with diet and exercise to keep it off long term, I have lost over 100lbs 3 different times... If you had cancer would you think that the treatment was an easy out or out of gods plan. I totally understand your reluctance, I have been there in making this decision, but I am having my surgery on the 218th and I consider it a gift from god that I will finally have a tool that will allow me to be successful once and for all. Congrats on your weight loss so far, but I consider my health and being healthier as the result of weight loss part of gods plan regardless of how I do it, I believe He has wanted me to be a thin person all along and I am now being given the gift of a tool to help me do just that.

Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
