How much could you get down?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I was banded a couple of days ago and I have instructions to drink 8oz of protien drink in the morning and 8oz at night. I am only getting down 2oz at a time. Is this normal because of swelling or should I be concerned about it? Also the gas is painful.....any suggestions?:)

How long does it take you to drink the 2 oz? what happens when you try to drink more?

And the gas...if it's external (pumped in during surgery) the things like Gas X won't help because it's not IN your digestive system, it's outside around the organs. What helps with that is time. Your pain med should help.

If its internal then gas x strips will help you break it up and burp it out.

It takes me about 5 minutes. If I try to continue on it feels kinda sour on my stomach. Im afraid of throwing up :) so I stop.

Definitely call your doc. You may need a different Protein Shake or some anti-nausea med. Does Water impact you the same way?

What helped me with the gas pain was a lot of walking around and if you have someone there to help you, massage! Mine were extremely painful and I had a hard time breathing, so 2 hours after surgery I was walking walking walking...It were mainly around my left shoulder/chest area so I had my husband and mom give me a massage which helped tremedously....

As for the Protein shake...a few days post op, I would Water it down a bit more, due to the swelling, it's going to be harder to get a lot more down, but it gets better quick. I wouldnt be too worried, if it persists then I would contact your doctor again. Every doctor has different post op diets, but most that I've researched, you have to be on Clear liquids for a week.

Good Luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
