HELP! Pre-op diet questions....

Recommended Posts

ok, so I am set to have surgery May 20th. I've been on the pre op diet for going on 11 days now. I've lost 9.5 pounds. I'm really frustrated. This past week, I've only lost 2 pounds and this morning when I stepped on the scale, I'd gained a half a pound. I'm following everything exactly as I should, but can't even stand to eat the same foods anymore, but I am. It's a struggle, but I'm doing it. I've been exercising every day as well and drinking my Protein Shakes. I know that my period is due in a few days and figure this is bloat from that, but has anyone gone through the same thing? Any suggestions or anything? I'm just feeling really down about it today and could use some reassurance. If you have any advice at all, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks so much.

You're probably right ... time of the month. And it happens to lots of people. I'm past that (and not missing it) but fluctuations are normal and will still be a part of your life after surgery. You've lost really well for 11 days....almost a pound a day is not a typical weight loss or a sustainable rate. You're doing fine!

Thanks for the reply Cathy. I completely know not to expect to keep losing at the rate I have, especially after surgery. I guess the reason I'm frustrated is because the surgeon said to lose 10-20 pounds with this pre-op diet, and I find myself fluctuating with just these 10 pounds. I know it's crazy to get upset about losing 9.5 pounds in 11 days, hell, I should be happy. But I guess just seeing the gain really hit me and made me mad! Thanks for your kind words! And congrats on your weight loss!

I agree with Cathy. The fluctuations are to be expected and you are doing really well. Stay away from the scale, if you can, as it has a tendency to be mean and unforgiving. Try to focus on what you are doing right, keep exercising, and keep a positive attitude. Your brain is in charge now. You can do this and you just have to believe it. We are all cheering you forward. Can you hear us? YAAAAAAY! :)

Just hang in there, you are doing great! Even after surgery I would easily go up and down about 3 pounds from one day to the next before the scale would finally settle down. Around that time of month it was not unusual for me to gain 5 pounds overnight!

Keep up the good work!!

Thanks everybody so much. I really appreciate it. You've already made me feel better! I guess I just needed to hear what you guys were saying. Maybe I'm just being hormonal with that time of the month! LOL. Thanks again and congrats to you all!

You will have ups and downs even after banding. Exercising can cause this. If you gain muscle and loose fat, muscle weights more than fat. Don't get discouraged. Stick with it. The real results will show in how your clothes fit.

Just stay the course, that extra half a pound will go, heck just having too much salt last night could do that, and I always gain a lb ot 2 at that time of the month. Hang in there you will start back down again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
