What rules were you given for the lifetime diet?

Recommended Posts

I just had my post-op visit and they've now gotten rid of the pureed stage. I'm now on the 'Lifetime Diet' but the new sheet they gave me is just a list of suggested foods with no amounts or details (the original one with the NUT was more specific). I'd like to know what rules you were given for your Lifetime Diet (real solid foods). I'm sure everyone's includes: no drinking with meals, eat Protein first then fruits/veggies. The other things I'd like to know are specifically:

1. No drinking ___ min. before meals?

2. No drinking ___ min. after meals?

3. Must drink ___ oz. per day?

4. Protein ___ oz. or grams, per meal or per day?

5. Total meal size ___ cups or ounces per meal?

6. Snacks or no snacks between meals?

7. Calories ___ per day?

8. Any other rules?

Thanks so much for your help!

Lean Proteins - approx 3 oz each meal. My guideline was to get at least 60 grams of protein a day, but they were not keen on it being from Protein shakes unless your band is tight in the morning. Limit drinking for 30 minutes prior to each meal, and no drinking for 1 hour after meal. At least 48 oz of liquids per day, preferable 64 oz. Meal size should be approx. 3 oz of protein and enough vegetables about the size of the palm of your hand. No snacks between meals, a proper fill should leave you comfortably full for 4-5 hours.

Caloric intake should be around 1000-1200 calories per day to limit your body going into "starvation" mode. You should try to keep your caloric intake steady - not 600 calories one day and 1600 calories the next.

Until you get to your "sweet spot" and are able to lose 1 1/2 to 2 lbs per week, if you feel hungry between meals, I would suggest a sugar-free pudding, s-f Jello, cottage cheese or a warm/hot beverage to tie you over.

And, like always, start exercising! 30 minutes a day. Hope this helps!!

Hi - I was told to stop drinking an hr before meals and not to drink for 90 minutes after meals. I was also told to drink 64 oz of Water a day and I was also told 3 oz of protein. I am allowed 2 snacks a day and should be between 1100 and 1200. Tonite I made a recipe from a book they gave me. It was baked flounder with fresh spinach that I cooked in a tb of olive oil and the juice of 1 lime. It also had 2 tbs of grated cheese on top. Very filling and only 135 calories. I hope this helps.

I'd like to know what rules you were given for your Lifetime Diet (real solid foods).

1. No drinking 30 min. before meals

2. No drinking 60 min. after meals

3. Must drink 64 oz. per day

4. Protein 60-80 grams per day

5. Total meal size 1/2 to 3/4 cups per meal

6. No Snacks between meals

7. As little calories as possible per day?

8. No heavy/thick breads that'll swell in the pouch; no stringy veggies, i.e. celery; no fruits with seeds, i.e. certain oranges, watermelon; no caffeine; no popcorn--which is the hardest for me because I LOVE POPCORN! :)

this is so interresting to me seeing all the differences in drs advice.

Im not suppose to eat 30 min before and after meals. I eat 4 oz per meal... I think im supposed to get 60 grams of Protein a day. I can eat anything that is tollerated by me speciffically. I eat popcorn and caffine.... everything in moderation. I have no idea how many calories I get a day, but im supposed to get 1000-1200 a day. i try to eat balenced meals and if im hungry then I'll have a snack. this is very much a lifestyle change and NOT diet like at all for me.

good luck!

I was told No drinking 30 minutes before meals.

Can drink 30 minutes after a meal.

Need to drink at least 64 oz. per day.

Protein should be btween 60-80 gms a day.

Protein shakes for Breakfast to insure Protein intake is high and in case of restriction in mornings,

Each meal should be 1/2 to 1 cup of food.

Stop eating if I feel full sooner.

Snacks should be sf pudding, cheese stick or fruit.< /span>

Limit calories to 1200 per day.

Caffiene is okay if it is not an appetite stimulant to me.

No gum, no soda and no rice.

At my Doctor appointment yesterday he said:

4oz Protein at meals. I am to evaluate 10 minutes after eating that to see if I am statisfied. If not, I guess I'll get a fill on June 2nd.

No red meat, bread, rice, potatoes, gum, soda or high calorie drinks.

I'm suppose to eat every 2-4 hours.

The appointment lasted no more than 5 minutes. In & out.

No red meat...EVER? I don't think I've seen anyone else have that rule. Is the eating every 2-4 hours forever? I'm only allowed 3 meals, no Snacks. This is all so interesting.

You know BG I don't know that it's a forever & ever thing. Maybe I shouldn't have posted here, maybe it's a just for now/pre-fill requirement. Sorry for being confused, it seems to be happening a lot lately :cursing:

I'd be in bad shape if my 5 yr old knew I had "oldtimers". She already feels she rules the roost .

I think I'll be getting a fill on June 2nd. But I thought I was getting a fill on Tuesday.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
