Smoker & Alcohol / Scheduled to get banded in June / Looking for companion

Recommended Posts

Scheduled to have surgery on June 12th.

Meditrim (pre-op diet) on the 29th of this month.

And God Damn it I cheated :mad2:

Supposedly I should stop smoking from today the 12th. I knew this was coming, so I purposely had more yesterday, but today I feel like it's on the 12th I can cheat a lil bit. But sigh, I feel so bad, I had craving and in the end i had 2 full "120 Capri" cigarettes :(

I am an occasional smoker. I smoke none a day, or if i feel stressful i'll have up to 3 a day. ( unless i'm drinking i have alot more ) But I know I can handle the alcohol issue though i loveee drinking ( I don't drink beer, but i love cocktails shooters bicardi pineapple :D ), but I overestimated myself for smoking.

Hope to meet people that had gone through "quitting smoking phase" and looking for a companion to "not smoke" together.

I quit smoking to prep not only for my surgery, but my HEALTHY new life. What helped me the most? Do a search with quick smoking before surgery and take a look at pix of how your skin won't heal and whatnot due to the nicotine...as well as you want your lungs in tip top shape before you go under! best of luck to you!!

I also has to quit smoking in order to have surgery. It was really hard but I sure did suprise myself. I have to be smoke free for 2 months before I can even go to the seminar or have a consult. June 6th will mark my 2 months and I can't wait. They say they will give me a nicotine test to see if I have been smoking. I don't want to risk failing because I will have to wait another 2 months. I wouls die if that happened. I just can't wait till June 6th.....

I was not asked to quit, but I cut back for the surgery. If it gets too hard, try the patch or nicotine gum, it will get you through the first few days, then maybe you will be able to quit completely. Good luck!

You need to quit. The nicotine will make your hydration level change a lot, and make getting properly adjusted very difficult. If you don't quit, completely, you will regret it when later with the band.

I have never heard of this before...

I didn't stop nor cut back and my band and weight loss is just fine. I am going to do that search though and see, my skin is tighten up just fine cause i work out everyday!

Weird... im going to ask my Doc.

You are right, for some people it doesn't change at all. I know for others it can really make things change a lot.

It probably depends on how regular your smoking is, and how spaced out it is, also some people smoke with almost no change in BP, while others change a lot.

My insurance requires that I quit smoking 2 months prior to surgery or they will not cover the procedure, and my surgeon will absolutely not do the procedure on anyone that smokes. Just my 2 cents.

I quit for 10 days prior to surgery - the day before surgery I smoked - I told them (the anathieoligist) when I got to the hospital - I still smoke about a pack a day - I got to my sweet spot in 2 fills - never had a problem related to my band nor healing after surgery

I went to a PS and she told me it's not the smoke but the nicotine affects on your veins (healing after surgery) so you have to be total nicotine free for 30 days prior to surgery no patch no gum nothing - Well I haven't had PS yet..

You smoke 3 cigs a day - I don't think you will have a problem- but it;s up to your doc..

Ya I know I need to quit - and in time I will - I can only treat one addiction at a time

As to the cocktails - High calories no nutrional vaule and your band isn't going to stop those at all - so becareful

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
