Can't take deep breaths...

Recommended Posts

I'm finding it extremely hard to take deep breaths-especially when I first wake up, yawn or cough- and when I manage to do it, I end up dry reaching (sorry prob too much info). Had an awful time last night with it....its like I'm vomiting but nothing actually comes out....sometimes it will just happen to me at any given time - I went to the shops the other day and had to stand still for 5 mins to stop myself from vomiting...i felt very dizzy and nauseas....

Has anyone experienced this?? Is it normal?? I really hope it go's away soon - it's horrible!!

Oh, and I'm still only only nutritional fluids (custard, yoghurt, sustagen, Optifast etc)...so it can't be the food can it??!! I really hope this is normal!

Did they give you the breathing thing to do to expand your lungs after surgery? If so, are you doing it? It is supposed to keep you from getting pneumonia. You probably should call your doctor, because it sounds like it is bad enough to have you worried.

No they didn't tell me anything about lung exercises. I felt sick at the hospital and the nurses just told me to breath it out...deep breaths in and out. That's all.

I am usually ok...like right at this moment, I am fine with breathing in and out deeply..it's just occasionally that I get light headed/nauseous and vomity after it - usually first thing in the morning or after a burp/cough....sometimes it seems to just happen out of the middle of nowhere....I wonder if its my body fighting the band or even the lack of food??! I just hope it passes.

If I am still having problems next week I will give my doc a call...at least then I would have given it a good week post op.

That did happen to me. It was uncomfortable to breath for a about a week or so for me...I think it's still the anesthesia. I would recommend coughing periodically to get that stuff out of your lungs. Also make sure you're walking. That will help.

I was band on 5-5-09. I experience the same thing from time to time, but I use the aspirator that they gave me. If I am at the store then I stop and take deep breathe. Hold it a and then release it. It is painful sometime an I hope it goes away soon.

Aspirator, yeah, that is what the breathing thing is called! Thanks... I absolutely could NOT think of what it was called.

It's an "incentive spirometer"....or at least that's what we call it here in the USA. You inhale and it keeps your lungs clear, and prevents the development of pneumonia, post op.

If you don't have one, buy a bag of balloons and blow up balloons (about 5 balloons, every hour or two) until this passes. Blowing up the balloons will require deep breathing and help clear, and keep clear, your lungs. Once the balloon you are using gets stretched out and doesn't resist, toss it and get a new one

If it doesn't get better in a day or so, or if you develop a fever, call your doc.

Well, I never would have remembered that word, but I did use mine exactly as directed. I figured they wouldn't have sent me home with it if it wasn't important.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
