Thinking about the Band

Recommended Posts

I just joined this site. I am 50 lbs overweight and am considering the lapband. I have a consultation appointment on Thursday with Dr. Simpson in Phoenix, AZ. I'm nervous but desperate. I am in a senior management role with a Fortune 100 company where I am required to travel alot. The job is also stressful, hence why I'm so overweight. If anyone used Dr. Simpson I'd like to hear about your experience.

Thank you.

Just a comment ... if you expect your insurance to pay for lap band surgery for only 50 pounds, you may find that you don't qualify for the surgery unless you pay for it out-of-pocket. Insurance usually requires a BMI of 37 or higher AND two co-morbidities. Not always but almost always.

Cathy,

Thank you for your comments. You bring up good points. I am blessed to not to have to worry about insurance covering the procedure, but I have high cholesterol, borderline diabetes and thyroid disease and my physician contributes all to my weight. So I might be ok.

Actually I am most concerned with the down time after surgery and the post-surgical diet.

Thanks!

You will probably do very well with the lapband as long as you research it and work hard.

I was out of work for one week...recovery was not bad at all! The first two days were the worst--and honestly not that bad. The post surgical diet can be a pain...usually liquid for like a month I think and then purees for two weeks and finally solids.

Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
