I'm new here. I'm being banded May 26th (day after Memorial day). I start my liquid diet tomorrow for the 2 weeks pre-surgery.

My doc hasn't done a lot of bands but has done 200 or so bypasses. Dr. Kasemsap in Melbourne, FL. I really like him though and feel very comfortable with him.

I'm somewhere near 290 now. I can't believe I even wrote that number. It just doesn't seem I could have gotten to 290. I've always been heavy, but 290 is scary heavy to me.

I'm 43. I've always been able to change my weight 5+ pounds in the space of a couple/three days. Weigh me on Monday and I could be 280. Weigh me on Wednesday and I could be 286.

I'm scared and excited at the same time, seems to be normal from all I've read. I'm not scared of the surgery, that's the easy part. I'm more scared that this is kind of my last chance so if it doesn't work, then what? How much of a loser would I be if this doesn't work (pun intended)?

Welcome! I can relate to your concerns, because I'm in the same place. I'm not banded yet either, and don't even have a date, but I know I can do this. You can do this to. The people on the board are so helpful and encouraging. Just keep reading and learning here. Everyone is here to support you.

Joan

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
