Any of you Aussies going to the lap band conference in October? I am, I cant wait.

No, I found it really hard to "get to know" the ozbanders. You had to already be "in" to be "in" if you know what I mean?

I'm still trying to decide LOL. Going to QLD for a few days next week, so we'll see how much $$ I have when I get back and go from there.

Hey Samee,

I dont do ozband either, and yes I know what you mean. There are people from all over the place coming and not just ozbanders. I think it will be a really good learning experience...have booked into the hotel, hubby is having kids and I am going to PARTAY!!

Well I spose I wouldnt call it party at a lap band conference lol. I hope some of you can come as I would love to catch up with you.

That's it! I'm moving! :(

Wow. That is great. I always knew the US was pretty jacked healthcare-wise, but what an astonishing example of how much! Hope all will be well!

Seemed to me that when I went to the surgeon yesterday all that seemed relevant was that I'd had a weight problem since childhood and had been dieting for 25 years. That was it, I was approved. I'd been so worried.

Here, if the surgeon approves something, the health fund wont quibble. Except for cosmetic surgery of course, that's self pay, except in special circumstances.

Yankee here -- I injured my back in Melbourne in 1986 and painfully made my way to the Royal Victorian Hospital. Great care for very little money, even for a visitor. And great big doses of codeine! Gotta love the place.

Thanks for the info, Kel. I'll let you know. My sis is getting married a week after that so we may be busy with last minute things...but I'll try.

i live in perth and my surgery, fills, dietician, psych etc etc was all completely FREE on medicare. i was about 18 months on the waiting list, going through the motions, and it was done by a surgeon who's done about 500 of them. and people complain about paying their taxes.

i can go on a waiting list and get it done for nothing but will have to wait 12 months for it.

The surgeon has also done over 1000 of the bands

i just dont know if i can wait that long

Why not get yourself on the list anyway though? I mean it's not a quick process even with private health insurance - takes a couple of months. You could put yourself on the list and also take out insurance if you dont have it and wait the 12 month waiting period and see which comes up first.

I had a GRRR moment with the surgeon I'm seeing though. I mean, I went having researched and taken months to decide on this and he went through everything, agreed it would be beneficial for me and then said he wanted me to attend an information night. I told him I'd been to one the week before and he said he wanted me to go to one of his information nights - next one being 27th September. He told me to attend and then make another appointment with him to tell him what I wanted to do. Great - I have to wait till October 13 to see him again and pay $120 for a five minute consultation - I tell him yes, he writes out a million referrals for all the pre op testing. Could have done that last week when I saw him!

i have already had my private health insurance now for 4 yrs so i dont have to wait for the 12 month qualifying period. But i know what you mean about it still taking ages. I prob wont be getting done till late nov early dec cause the doc keeps going away. I have already seen the dietitian and have to go for a sleeping test and get blood tests done. I really dunno whats going on yet!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
