Should I tell my co-workers?

Recommended Posts

Anyone who notices my weight loss I will tell them I'm losing under the supervision of a doctor on a modified liquid diet, including Protein and limiting my carbs. True. Right?

I agree 100% Rosebud. I have been torn about not telling or telling as I don't want to lie to my co-workers, especially those I am very close to. So, I've decided to explain the week off work as the last time my fiance and I will have before fall to take any time off together as he's beginning a new job which will be very time intensive. And, when I get back, I will tell them that I am losing weight under the supervision of a doctor ... which will be the truth as I will be seeing my PCP for follow-up (as he is quite interested in learning about the procedure, etc.) The fact that I have had WLS is a very private matter and should not matter to them one way or the other.

There are others, however, outside of work, from whom I don't believe I will be able to keep it from; however, I will cross that bridge when I get to it ... and the surgery will be over with by then and they will be able to see the results ... so what will they be able to say???

My office manager and company owner know. Office manager is a living plastic surgery advertisement :rolleyes2: and has relatives that have done bypass. So no judgements there and a videographer that his mother has had bypass. All my close personal friends know but even with some of them, I've not really gone into many more details because of few of them have given me the "I've got a relative/friend that lost theirs with just hard work and dieting." So I knew where that judgment was going. My daughter had hers 14 months ago and she's my biggest supporter and personally family is all that matters to me and they're all supportive as they have their list of medical issues and understand you have to do what you have to do.

So I will probably follow the "don't ask-don't tell" policy of the military...lol

Good luck all

I have been trying to decide the same thing. My son is the only one that knows and I think until its done, that will stay that way. Mostly because I'm going to Mexico and I know the reaction that will bring. After the fact, well I'll decide day by day.

I had fun with the reactions to Mexico. They would look at me in horror and I'd return the look asking how much research they have done on the topic. Do they know nothing about the world outside of the US? Then I shake my head and make some snide comment about how crappy our schools are about teaching cultures and ANYTHING outside of the US.

Then I'd ask them specifically what they know about the topic. That usually shut 'em up.

I just turned the tables on them. But I have a pretty strong personality and people don't give me a ration of crap easily. ;o) In real time I have a very soft voice but a big attitude. I love to confuse people.

But I have a pretty strong personality and people don't give me a ration of crap easily.

Me either. Plus you can set the scene so to speak. I start out by telling it from my POV -- I had surgery to remove the part of my stomach make ghrelin so now I don't have a ravenous appetite. I've lost weight before, but I could never keep it off because I was hungry all the time. Then I follow up with something like "It's awesome!" or "It's the best thing I've ever done."

People would have to be horribly rude and pretty ballsy to follow that up with "it's the easy way out" and they don't. In fact, I've managed to make thin people who work pretty hard to stay thin jealous they can't get this surgery! :rolleyes2:

I hardly told anyone I got the band. Some of my relatives asked how I was losing weight at that time, and I told them I was sick of being fat so I drank slim fast for Breakfast and lunch and had a sensible dinner. I also said in the beginning, I had slim fast only four times a day. Then I tell them I go to the gym 6 days a week and now I watch my weight very carefully.

I only needed to lose 15-20 lbs when I got the revision surgery, so I don't think it will be a big deal when I lose what I gained back.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
