Mom off to Tijuana for daughter's lapband surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi All - As a concerned mom, I've been trying to research all and everythng re: Mexico and the surgery itself. As well as the surgeon and facility. My 40+ daughter and I are leaving Monday for San Diego, she'll have her op on the 14th, recuperate on the 15th and fly home to New Jersey on the 16th. Will she be able to handle all of this so soon?

I am concerned about sanitation in the operating room and post op with her incision. Her doctor is Pedro Kuri and I haven't read anything bad about him, but it bothers me that most accounts focus on his personality. We Yanks suffer from a lack of bedside manner here in the states so I can see it would be most impressive. I am reassured of one thing, she will be under care of a local physician here in NJ for fills and post op care.

Two different people emailed to reassure me about Mexican doctors, but then they both mentioned that they were able to observe an operation and I find that rather unsanitary in itself, no? The doctors in these accounts were Kuri and another one from a different clinic, I forget which one.

Can anyone tell me what the area surrounding the hospital and hotel is like? Is it safe and clean..?

All responses will be so welcomed.. I am having a hard time with this..

Jayburn

I do not know what hotel or hospital Dr. Kuri uses but I went to Tj for my surgery with a different Dr. and I was completely satisfied with the hotel and the hospital that my Dr. uses. Both were satisfactory to me. I have no regrets or complaints, Iam a very happy MX patient. There are several women here who were banded by Dr. Kuri who Iam sure will reply to your concerns and questions. Best of luck to your daughter.

I was banded on 8/25 by a different Dr and was very impressed with the cleanliness and professionalism of all. My only complaint would be the nursing staff spoke limited english. I live in San Diego, so I know what TJ is like and was concerned myself about sanitary issues, but once I got there I thought my Dr's office & the OR was cleaner than most I've seen in the states. As far as the incision went, I'm 13 days post op and my incisions are healing wonderfully. A couple of them look like a cat scratched me. As long as you follow the Dr's instructions in caring for it she should be fine. I started putting neosporin on mine last week when the glue started coming off, and they've almost all healed up completely. I can't tell you anything about Dr Kuri from personal experience , but I've seen a lot of happy patients on this site.

I'm sorry I can't tell you anything about the doc, I had my surgery here in the states. I do want to welcome you & your daughter, & wish you both the best of luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
