How are there people on here so chipper the day after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Cause I feel like crap! I'm not regretting the surgery or anything like that, but I feel like crap. So I totally do not understand those so happy and bright the day after. I'm in pain and certainly in no mood to think of how wonderful this could be. But like I said, I'm not regretting and I know it will pass. But, waaaa! I don't feel good. Guess I just want to complain for the moment. Thanks! :tt2:

You are right, it will pass, but dangit, I felt like crap for about a week after banding also. I couldn't get out of bed by myself, and I was miserable. Now, I feel fabulous! Some people just bounce back quickly, and other do not. We seem to be in the "do not" category.

The day OF surgery I was chipper because I was jacked up on pain killers all day :-) The day after was a different story, and the next day was the worst for me. I could barely move and I needed the pain meds to get through the day at all. Day 4 things started getting better. Right now I'm 9 days out and not only do I feel like I didn't even have surgery, I'm able to eat mushies without any sort of hint of PB or any other problem. Truth be told I feel like I could eat anything but I'm going to wait for my surgeon to give the go ahead.

Some people take longer to heal than others, but feeling chipper the day after without being completely high on pain killers seems pretty far fetched to me.

I wondered the same thing! I read all these stories beforehand of people who were like, "I had surgery at 9:30 and I was out at 9:43 and I feel great! I ran a 5k on the way home from the hospital, and stopped to change an old lady's flat tire after that!"

Imagine my surprise when I felt TERRIBLE the day of and the day after. I didn't regret it, per say... but I felt pretty dang close to regretting it. I can't even really make myself think back on those first 48 hours because it was so bad that it just makes me feel sick inside to remember.

Now, on day 4 I can say I feel like a completely different person from the one that came home from the hospital... So it only gets better! That's the good news! (so far...)

hey hkitty or HI NEIGHBOR!! I am down the road and round the corner. Sorry you not feeling the best but it does get better. I will confess to being one of the lucky ones. I was overnight at the hospital and I went out the first night home and the next 3 nights. My doc put in a slow delivery pain med system and I had no (body)pain, just gas pains. I tend to push myself just because I always have. You don't have to get out like I did, but you do need to move as much as you are comfortable with to help with the healing. The gas just can't be explained!!! It woke me from a dead sleep the second night home. Moving around is the only thing that really helped me with that. I would just walk from room to room to ease it. Now I will get gassy if I eat to quickly, which happens often. Husband is getting a little tired of that one. About 2 weeks after surgery I woke up tired one morning and was like that all day for about 3 days. Doc said it was a reaction to the surgery slightly delayed. Follow the instructions your doc gave and listen to your body. Congrats and good luck. Like I said I am close by and any time you need to vent I will be there for you. Hit me a PM and I will give you my info so you can contact me if you want.

I heard about those people with good luck too. I wasn't one of them. I stayed overnight in the hospital and I'm so glad I did. I needed the painkillers. I felt like an elephant stepped on my stomach, then stayed there. After that, into the night, I became ill from the painkillers and needed another drug to keep me from throwing up. I could get out of bed, even on the first day, but it wasn't like it easy or not painful. I do not regret the surgery and believe it is highly effective. It's just not easy sailing to actually go about the process of it.

Guess what I wasn't one of the lucky ones. I was in much pain for about a week. I'm a month out and feel terrific you will feel better in a couple of days. Congratulations on being banded and take care.

The first day was yucky and the following day was less so but I mostly slept. By day 3 I was feeling much better. I am 6 months out though and still feel tired.

I was one of the lucky ones and apart from a little pain port side, I felt fine. I didn't take any of the pain killers I was sent home with. We all react differently to aneasthetic and have varying pain thresholds so it doesn't help to compare yourself to other people.

Rest up and your body will heal and you will feel chipper yourself in a few days.

Sue

TXAmy you totally made me LOL, thanks! Niterun, I have the OnQ as well, and I don't feel like it's doing anything!:tt2: Hubby says if I didn't have it the pain would probably be worse, he's probably right. I am walking around, but definitely spending most of the time in bed, I like that much more!

I'm not glad that many of you went through pain too, but glad I'm not alone.

Personally, I was EXTREMELY LUCKY...I took a walk the afternoon after I had surgery, took no pain meds at all (not even Tylenol) and went back to work in 3 days. But that's not the first time I've had surgery and responded physically in that manner. Everybody is different. Some of us just don't have a terribly adverse reaction to the anesthesia nor do we take to our beds for much of anything. Part of it is physical and part of it is psychological.

The good news is, you WILL feel better and it won't be long before you feel fantastic. In the meantime? Get up and walk. Doesn't have to be a 5K, LOL, just walk to the mailbox and back a couple of times today, to the end of the block and back tomorrow and the next day.....drink your Protein shakes, Water, broth, juice.....and you'll be feeling better in no time.

I was banded 5/7/09. Today I still don't feel well. It's hard to take more than a few sips at a time, I'm pretty sore and have small waves of nausea. I don't know if it's because they did a hiatal hernia repair at the same time. I have had surgery before (C/S and hysterectomy) thought I would sail through like I did in the past. Not so good this time.

I felt pretty bad for two days after surgery. Bad gas pains and an anxiety reaction from the anesthesia. Short walks, naps helped a little, but I had real trouble sleeping.

by day 3 things started to get better and by day 5 I was really back to being me. Hang in there it does get better!

I was banded last Monday and I'm still VERY sore in my midsection, especially around my large incision/port. I now have bruising around all my incisions, and I stil can't bend over for anything. I've yet to go an hour without my pain meds, and I usually have a pretty high pain tolerance!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
