Gastric sleeve recovery

Recommended Posts

hi,

I am considering the sleeve over the band and I wanted to know how many days did you have to stay at the hospital?

How many days off work?

Thanks.

I stayed in the hospital for 3 nights. I had surgery on a Wed. and I went back to work on Tuesday. I could have easily gone back to work on Monday but I thought I might as well take a day off.

I stayed overnight so about 36 hours. Went back to work at 1.5 weeks but wished I'd stayed out for 2.

I stayed in the hospital for 3 nights but felt fine after 2 nights and went back to work (13 hour night shift) one week post-op.

Thanks for your replies.....forgot to ask how long was surgery? Very curious and i cannot find this info anywhere.

Thanks.

I was in the hospital 4 nights but that is unusual. In the US it's usually one night, in Mexico it is usually 2-3 nights.

My surgery was 1.5 hours but it was a revision and not just a straight sleeve. Usually it's less than an hour unless your BMI is very high then it can take longer.

I was a revision also and my surgery was just under 2 hours. I had a lot of adhesions and scar tissue so that accounted for the extra time. The man who had surgery the same day as I did was a first time surgery person and he was sleeved in just under an hour.

Typical OR times are 45 min to an hour.

A few months ago my doc sleeved a person with a 100BMI. She said it took him 2.5 hours to do. Yet others are easier and take 45 minutes or so. It depends on previous abdominal surgeries, the amount of scarring to dissect through, the BMI, lots of issues.

I was scheduled to stay in two days, but I was doing so well I went home the next day.

I went back to work a week later, and had no problems.

10 days of a liquid diet, 7-10 days of full fluids, 10-13 days of a soft diet, and an unrestricted diet after 30 days. If you read through this section of the board, you'll get a lot of valuable info.

What is the difference between a liquid diet and full fluids?

Thanks

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
