Feeling a bit discouraged...

Recommended Posts

So, Im on the 6th day of my pre-op liquid diet, but 3rd month since knowing I was going to be banded. My surgery date is May 15th, and I was supposed to lose 8-10 lbs prior to surgery date. I started doing the Slimfast diet as soon as I met with the nutritionist and I've only lost a total of 4 whopping pounds. Although I have been on this liquid diet, I have cheated ;) but with "healthy foods". Like adding asparagus to my chicken broth, or an egg. Today I had a couple of walnuts, by couple I mean like 6 ;). I joined the gym to excercise, but I've gone maybe 3 times, which I plan on changing today! I HAVEN'T LOST A POUND!!! I need to lost about 6 lbs by next week or my surgeon will not perform the surgery! I'm scared. I stopped sugar and been eating better than I have my whole life, but my body doesn't want to let it go! HELP!

Hi

My surgery date is May 14th. I went to ask.com & asked how do you shrink a liver for surgery. The answer came back to this very web site with really good explainations. You might check it out. Because of what I learned I know what foods will kick-start a huge Water loss (10 lbs in 5 days for me). I'd think you also could kick that water out, thusly showing the weight loss that you need to show.

Good Luck Mary

Did your doctor give you a diet to follow? Or did he just say lose 8-10 lbs? If he gave you a diet to follow, do it! Without cheating!

If he didn't tell you what to eat or drink, then this is what my doctor had me do. I could have up to 6 Protein Shakes per day, along with lots of Water, and I could have sugar free Jello and broth. But, try to stay away from the broth because it is usually too high in sodium. I lost 11 lbs in 8 days with this plan. But, I followed it TO THE LETTER!

You really need to get a handle on this now, because post-op it is extremely important to follow your doctors diet. You can search the forum for more information on this.

Good luck to you.

If you've been "cheating" on a diet your doc gave you, then consider this a wake-up call. I cheated and lost the weight my way; my liver was still too thick and I came to in recovery with no band.

So my awful lesson that I can share is "Do what your doc TELLS you. If he wanted you to have walnuts they'd be on the list!"

Post op it is VITAL that you follow the instructions. My doctor yesterday told me the number ONE reason for band slippage is people cheating on their post op diets.

So figure this is a lesson. Do what you're supposed to, if you don't lose then postpone the surgery (better than coming to without the band) and stick to your rules.

It's worth it.

My doctor has not mentioned that he would not do the surgery unless I lost any given amount of weight. He did tell me to drink 3 Protein Shakes per day, and any zero calorie drinks that I want. that's it.

My first instinct is to cheat, but it's only me that I'm cheating on. I don't think my doctor would cancel the surgery but I don't want to find out the hard way.

My nutritionist told me that the biggest reason doctors want us on the liquid diet is so that we can start getting used to drinking Protein shakes and being on a liquid diet.

Ask 20 people and you'll get 20 answers.

Good luck toughing it out. You're not in this alone, so know that I'm suffering with you today.

Good luck....

Ok I had my surgery on 2/6/09 and had a couple months to lose the 15 pounds I was supposed to take off before surgery but of course I waited till 2 weeks before to do it. I went to wal-mart and did the hollywood 48 hour liquid miracle diet lost 8 pounds (water weight) in 2 days. After I did 2 shakes and 1 small meal a day by the 2 weeks I was able to lose it. Good luck!!

My doctor/program required also to lose 10 percent of your total body weight in order to get the final approval. It's a total of six months to go through the whole program before they "approve" you to go through to insurance approval and the surgeon. I drug my heels until my sixth-month appt. I had lost a few but had myself convinced that they really didn't mean it...lol. Well, they did. Go for 6th appt when I should have been given my green light. She sent me home with a month to lose the additional 9-12 lbs. That was my wake-up call. I hate going to the gym. So I bought a stationary bike. Rode it twice a day for 20 minutes at a pretty decent speed. Kept my calorie intake to 1,000 but the biking was burning off 300-400 of that. I was back at the doctor's in two weeks. Plus the day before I got hold of some of my daughter's Water pills, but like another poster wrote there are foods that will have the same effect.

So it can be done, but if your program requires you to lose weight don't take the chance I did of believing they're not really serious.

My daughter's doctor did not require the 2-week liquid diet and didn't require the weight lost beforehand, but she also paid cash for her surgery. some of this is driven by insurance companies.

Good luck. You can do it.

Trisha

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
