help, trying to find a bike

Recommended Posts

Hey, i really want a bike for my Bday, its only one month after my surgery date. I want a good strong bike, there are some bikes ive tried to ride recently like beach cruisers. they feel like they are going to break cause im so heavy.

I was wondering if anyone has any type of bike that rides good even at such a heavy weight?

if not, anyone who is smaller than me that has a bike so I know where i need to be to get a bike I want?

thanks guys!

I don't have a bike but have heard from other plus sized people that they have gone to a bike shop and actually gotten, kind of, fitted for a bike? Exercise and bike riding are great ideas and a good bike can do wonders for you.

Just pick a local bike shop and get some help!

you might also google it. I just googled "bicycles for plus sized people" and this was the first site to pop up, but there are TONS of them

Good luck!

Monkey hit it on the nose! Go to a bike shop rather than Walmart or Target. They can help you find a bike that has the strength for now but still the performance you need to continue to be able to ride it for some time to come. I have a friend who rides in races and he suggested to me that I go with him to look at bikes because there is a huge range of prices and features and anybody should be able to find a bike that meets their requirements.

Just chiming in to agree with everyone here. When I bought my bike last summer, I went to a local shop and the owner was extremely helpful in finding the right bike for my size. It was used, so I got a great deal, too.

I'm pre-op and my current weight is 280. I bought a Huffy Cranbrook Cruiser bike from walmart last week and am starting out with it.. It seems to do okay under my weight and was very cheap (about $90).

I'm only able to do about 20 minutes at a time on a flat surface, but that is better than not moving around at all. Also, it was very hard for me to 'relearn' how to ride the bike since I've never ridden one at this weight. I was very shaky and afraid I was going to fall over. Just keep at it and don't give up. After about 10 minutes, I was much less shaky and a little more confident on it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
