Help with psychologist

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

My problem is a bit different than most people who post on this thread. I have my surgeon, Dr. David Provost in Denton, TX, but I think I need to see a psychologist that specializes in weight loss.

A huge part of the problem is I live 300 miles away from my surgeon, so I don't think they will be able to recommend anyone. I have talked to a woman on a different Lap-Band forum that sees a weight loss psychologist, and she says it has really helped her.

I live in Amarillo, TX. Does anyone know of a weight loss psychologist in my area?

Joan

I'll tell you how I found the one I like in San Antonio, Texas...Google. I knew I wanted a "behavioral" psychologist (I wanted to modify my eating habits, not cry cuz i didn't get a pony...I DID get a pony! LOL not to belittle people with true emotional issues, that just wasn't the problem for me) SO I googled behavioral therapis eating disorder and up popped a list! I read through, found about 10 that took my insurance, and picked the one I ended up with. Had I not clicked with her, though, there were others to choose from.

You may want to try that. If you don't have a specific desire for a type of therapy (like I wanted a behaviorist) then just google psychologist eating disorder Amarillo and see where that gets you.

RestlessMonkey,

Thanks so much for the information. I had tried to google before, but I put in weight loss instead of eating disorder. I found 1 here in my city, so I hope I can see her. It will depend on if she takes Medicare patients. Thanks again!

Good luck! If she doesn't take Medicare, she may have a colleague who does. I asked my PCP and he had no clue! :)

I asked my PCP and my psychiatrist, and neither one of them knew of anyone! Amarillo is a lot smaller than San Antonio, so the choices of any kind of psychologist is very limited. I haven't had a chance to contact the 1 I found yet, but all they can tell me is no. Thanks for all of your help on all of the threads we have talked on.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
