Nasty Steri Strip Reaction

Recommended Posts

Ohh dear....

I had my f/u on Monday and he took off my steri strips because it was really red and itchy around the edges. We found thousands of tiny and not so tiny blisters under there! It's so GROSS! Not to mention that it itches like hell. I was up in the middle of the night taking benadryl fearful that I would itch in my sleep and open them up to infection. I only have 2 incisions, one is about 1/4 inch long and the other is 2 inches long. It's the big one that is blistered over such a large area. I'd post a picture but I'd hate for anyone to lose their appetite (unless you need help with hunger, then I'd be happy to oblige )

I've always been sensitive to tape, but this is ridiculous!! Anyone else have this?

I googled it and on a hysterectomy forum a woman's OB told her to put liquid Maalox on it (not on the incision tho) and it dried them up in 3 days....weird. I'm just using good old neosporin.

Would love everyone's take on this horror. Ugh.:D

I've never had a problem with steri-strips, but years ago I had a lump removed from my breast. They used the wide stretchy foam-like tape from the center front around to the center of my back. I broke out in blisters under the tape that night. My best friend spent hours picking the tape out of the blisters! It was horrible!

Something in the adhesive just doesn't agree with us! I've never heard of the maalox before, but calamine works.

I'm also allergic to adhesives. When you tell the hospital this they usually give you 'paper tape' which just changes the tape and not necessarily the adhesive. I did some of my own patch trials before this surgery, since I knew they weren't coming right off. I've found that some of the 3M Nexcare brand ones work best on me, so that's what they used (I had a small reaction, but not bad). I know this doesn't help you now though....I use Benedryl and a good antibiotic ointments (like you mentioned) to help the healing when I've had problems before. Also, remember the faster you get them off the better next time.

As crazy and as weird as the Maalox remedy sounds...I've applied it once today and the smaller blisters are already gone! There are a bunch of big ones left so I reapplied. We'll see what happens, I'll keep you posted as I use myself as a medical research guinea pig!

Yes I had this happen with both steri strips and band aids. I also had used some paper tape the other day and now am broken out from that too. I have been using benadryl cream on mine. I did stop using it though because it felt like it was burning one day. I took the bandaids off about 2 weeks ago and the steri strips one week ago and the rashes are finally fading. I am hopeing they will be gone within the next week. So in the future I just have to remember not to leave any type of bandage with adhesive on for very long.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
