I was turned Down TWICE! NOW I'm Getting Banded on May 21, 09

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I went in yesterday for my pre-op appt. They took blood and I met with Dr. and Nurse Prac. also had X-ray done and met with anesthesiologist. I was so nervous I prayed the whole time asked family to pray with me. In the end it went ok. I am still a bit nervous but I think it will be ok. I was not told I had to start pre-op diet but I have started eating less. I was simply told not to go out and do what some banders do; which is to try and eat everything right before surgery sort of a last super mentality. I have lost about 13 lbs.-15lbs on my own no pre-op diet but I intend to follow a pre-op diet any suggestions?

When I first started this journey I was 289lbs. went up to 297lbs (mostly because I had given up on having the sugery done. I was turned down 2 times and this point) I started thinking of what to do next and the girl who handles insurrance at the hospital I will be banded at told me I should appeal and try again. I did after the 3rd time and was approved! My point is hang in there. I started eating a little less mostly because I was scared and thought I should learn how to eat less now while awaiting surgery. About 3 weeks ago I was approved and have come down to 282. lbs.

I have been trying since November of last year!

Please give me ANY PRE-OP DIETS ANYONE HAS!!!!

Well, the saying, "Good Things Comes To Those Who Wait", has proven to be true in your case. I too have been turned down and became pretty discouraged, as I felt that perhaps I was not cut out to have this surgery. I started gaining weight, but later initiated the program again and was recently approved. I am scheduled for banding the end of May, 2009. Although it is an exciting venture, I am still very nervous and a bit freightened, as this is my first surgery. Nevertheless, I am so waiting to begin my journery with the new me.

My doc's pre-op diet was pretty easy. It's a liquid protien drink for Breakfast and lunch (I recommend powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury mixed with sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast. www.unjury.com

Then have a lean and green dinner. Four/Five ounces of lean meat and 1 cup of veggies.

It sounds hard, but when you think about needing to shrink your liver so the surgery will be safer, it makes it worth it.

Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
