Scared and excited...seeing doctor soon

Recommended Posts

 Is it possible to feel scared and excited at the same time? I'm in England, UK and feel so pleased that I came across this site! I've was referred from my GP in August 2008 to have bariatric surgery and am going to my appointment in 2 weeks. I feel so lucky to have been given this chance as I could never have afforded to pay for this myself. I'm absolutely thrilled to be finally able to be on control, am scared about the needles ;) (have a phobia), but think I need to look at the long term benefits too. I'm looking forward to being able to be confident about myself, but at the same time am doubting that I can get a genuine love of exercise:bored:. Hope to make lots of friends, that will be lifelong.

Thanks for the welcome.....

Welcome. You're feelings are normal. I had mixed emotions as well. More excited than scared at first, but when I was actually a day away from surgery more scared than excited. I had my surgery on May 1st and it went great. I only remember being in preop with the nurses putting in an IV and then in recovery. It was over in an instant. I have not had to use any pain medications. The most discomfort comes from a blotted feeling. For laparoscopic surgery they fill you with gas, and of course it has to work its way out. I'm forcing myself to drink fluids but it strange that I have no appetite at all. Usually if I go without Breakfast I am ready to chew my arm off by lunch.

Thanks for that. I'm sure you are right! We wouldn't be normal if we weren't scared i think! So glad it went well for you. Early days, but hey we all have to start somewhere. Am looking forward to it but have a phobia of needles so that is my first worry:scared2: Never mind, no pain no gain, or so they say. Good luck to you

HI,

I too am Very Scared and Very Excited all at once I go in for pre-op appointment in a few hours. Is anyone up at this time? I know I am!!!! I'm so worried I can't sleep appointment at 10:00 AM. I guess my fears are about the port, the blood test for surgery which by the way is on May 21, 2009. Please pray and encourage me if Anyone is up!!!

I wish you luck on your pre-op appointment. This is your first step on a long journey and your feelings are normal. I'm postop three days now and am doing great at least I think so. I have my first follow-up on May 12th. I'm thinking to myself is that all there is? I have no pain, just some mild discomfort when going from lying to sitting and I can't feel the port. I guess it is somewhere under the belly fat. I'm wondering now if he put the lap band in (that's a little joke). The odd thing is that I have no hunger or appetite and I technically haven't eaten in 4 days. Heck, I start driving the day after my surgery. I'm not taking in pain medications so I thought it was safe.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
