I have read that if something gets stuck and can't pass through the band, you will throw it up. Now for my question....what if your meal does pass through the band and due to illness or something you have to vomit. Can the food get up past the band?

if it could get down there, it can get back up. May not be the best thing for you, though.

I am sorry to say I can guarantee that it can come back up. It takes longer to get everything out though. However, it's not much different than pre-port.

Yes, and I am living proof. I had a bug and I did a whole lot of dry heaving before anything came up/out but it sure did.........

Since being banded back in November of 2008, I have only PBed. I have never actually vomited, Thank God! My doc says to call for anti-nausea meds instead. It works for me.

Yes it can, which is going to be a problem for me, I'm starting my preop diet again and had a reaction to something (dunno whether I was near someone that was sick or because I'm not eating anything) but I had to make myself vomit - Worries me what I'm going to do when I'm banded and have to make myself throw up.

Sarah I really don't understand having to make yourself vomit. I'm 54 and can say honestly that I have thrown up when I was very ill but NEVER EVER had to "make myself" vomit. ?? Not being pissy, just confused. You shouldn't have to make yourself throw up. Once banded if food gets stuck it will come up without you forcing it, if it won't go down...

I understand what she's saying. Sometimes you know you are getting sick, a stomach bug, the flu, bad food, whatever. Your stomach hurts and is churning. If you make yourself go throw up, you'll feel a lot better. Once it's out and your stomach is empty it is complete relief. (Just like when I used to be young and drink too much, get home and throw it up, you know you'll feel a lot better!)

Thanks for clearing it up. I NEVER have made myself throw up and it usually makes me feel worse, not better...I guess like crying makes some people feel better but not others. I thought everyone hated to throw up!

And I used to drink...but if I paid for it, I kept it down! LOL I think my digestive tract is a one-way. :tt2:

Sorry, I've never had to "make myself throw up" either. I wouldnt know how to do it, lol.

If I'm sick enough to vomit, I panic, I cry about it and behave like a complete baby, but eventually I vomit. If I'm not that sick it doesnt happen. And I would always do everything I possibly could to avoid it.

I dont know why I'm so afraid of it. Its never as bad when it happens as I think its going to be.

But it hasnt happened to me with a band.

My digestive tract is one way too RM.

Okay I should of been clearer with what I said lol, I've only ever made my self throw up twice, once I was throwing up anyway because I had a reaction to a medication and I ate something and it felt horrible in my stomach and it would have come back up anyway, second time was on sunday night, I just started the preop diet again and I had a fever, I took aspirin and I could just feel it floating in my stomach and I knew I needed to throw up to feel better. Those are the only 2 times I've made myself throw up, as for after I'm banded obviously I won't do that unless I'm extremely sick, anyone with a right mind would know you don't do that.

Also it's exactly what JillRenee said, sometimes your stomach churns and you NEED to get it out. Makes you feel way better.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
