Two weeks post-op, with no problems... Can I now eat mushies?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! Some advice needed, please.

The standard diet sheet I was given by my doctor suggests I should not have soft food, or "mushies" until week 5.

I've been on a liquid diet now for 2 weeks, and I really could use something a little more "food-like". Should I be able to eat some scramble eggs at this stage? Maybe a little bit of mashed potato?

Your thoughts on this matter are greaty appreciated.

Thanks!

Every dr is a little different. When I was in the liquid stage I did have alot of cheese Soup - sometimes I added some cream of potato soup to it for more substance. Just make sure that everything is liquid form. I was also kind of a pest- I would call my nutritionist asking to add one more thing in.

Pianoman, there are LOADS of things you can eat that fall under the liquid diet protocol. That said, 4 weeks on strictly liquid does sound like a long time. However, the only rules to follow are those of YOUR doctor, so if you're really uncomfortable give the office a call and see what they tell you.

I do agreee with Alex that 4 weeks of liquids is a long time but I also agree with herfor you to cal lyour Dr. to see if you are able to start mush earlier. Every Dr. has his or her reason for their post op instructions and every Dr. has a different post op diet.

Thanks for the (much needed) advice.

I suppose "consult your doctor" IS the obvious thing to do.

Never-the-less, I might try some scrambled eggs tonight, just to see how I get on. What's the worst that can happen? :D

Pianoman, I am assuming that you are on a modified (or full) liquid diet (stage 3) - this is what we are released from the hospital on. The following items fall into a full liquid diet:

Beverages:

Skim or 1% milk

Low sugar, decaffeinated, non-carbonated Fluid

Low sugar, low fat, high Protein supplements

Dairy products

Low fat, light yogurt

SF, FF pudding & custard

Low fat cottage cheese (blended)

Soup

Low fat cream Soups thinned down with 1 cup low fat milk (strained of chunks or blended)

Low fat broth

Miscellaneous

Plain hot cream of wheat or otameal (must be pourable consistancy)

SF popsicle

unsweetened applesauce

SF Gelatin

The stiches on your stomach are still trying to heal and eating something as solid as eggs may not be a good idea. Although five weeks does seem a bit long. I will be on this eating plan until my 3 week post op appointment and then the nutritionist will evaluate me to move to stage 4. If you really need a change I would encourage you to try something above that you might not have thought of and then call your doctor on Tuesday and discuss your eating plan. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Good luck,

My sister and I had surgery 8/29. We asked our doctor at our 1 week post op if we could start a few mushies. He said that it would be ok if we didn't overdo it. We have had baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, pintos and cheese (Taco Bell), potato soup--everything chewed thoroughly. We haven't had any problems with these foods. But, she tried an egg today and it made her chest hurt. I agree with you that the full liquid diet is rough. I don't think I could have lasted as long as you have.

I too am finally on mushies. I have a question. Why can't we use straws or chew gum? This has probably been answered but I can't find the answer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
