Newly banded, over 40 AND pregnant!

Recommended Posts

Hello there, my name is Tracey and I am 44 [turning 45 this year] and unexpectedly expecting....lol. What a lovely surprise this was, as we had always wanted more, but it just never happened.

Once we had all the tests done in the early stages [CVS, 4D Scans etc] and all was well, then I really started to relax and enjoy the experience. I am very happy and feel blessed to be given this opportunity to bring another child into the world.

My husband and I have three other daughters, with the birth of this child, I will have had a child every decade of my fertile life. I had my other children at 19, 21 and 31. They are 26, 24 and 14 and wonderful young women whose company I love.

I am due on the 24th of September this year, but my OB is insisting on a caesarean delivery so I will probably go in for that around the 17th of September. [date isn't set yet because I kept pushing for the chance to have a vaginal delivery]

I was lapbanded on November 7th last year [2008] and had my first and only fill in December. By the second week in January I could only manage thin liquids, so I knew something was wrong and went back to my surgeon to have some fill taken out.

I only had 3ml in, so she was a bit bemused by the whole thing, she took out 1ml, but it made no difference, she then removed another mil, but again, no difference. She took out the remaining mil, and I could manage soft food again. Woohoo!!!

About three weeks after that, we found out I was pregnant and it became clear...lol.

Anyway, I haven't been able to eat much, due to my stomach swelling around the band and giving me HUGE restriction, even though the band is not inflated at all. I have actually lost weight while I have been pregnant, which worried me at first, but because I have had fortnightly scans and blood tests, the doctor had continually reassured me that all is well.

I make sure I eat as balanced a diet as possible and have been on Elevit from the day I found out I was pregnant. I am now 19 weeks and the baby is 18cms and weighs 280gms [approx of course] according to my morphology scan last Monday.

I have lost 22kgs since my WLS in November last year.

You can read my entire story on my blog at Time to downsize. if you are interested. Drop by and say hi.

Boy the timing of this post is great! I would like to thank you for posting this here for me to find. I too just newly banded and found out I am pregnant as well. I was banded on January 8th, 2009. I am thinking I am about 5 to 6 weeks along. I am also 46 years of age. So now you now why I am thanking you for this. I am so worried and scard for I just started this weight loss program and afraid that I will gain the weight back and I don't want to do that if you know what I mean. You have given me so much hope. Again Thank you.

Wow.. congratulations Slenderella64 and to Peanutbnd too!!

I hope to get pregnant, I am single and was planning on using donor eggs due to my age (I turned 45 last month), but you guys give me hope that I possibly COULD have my own. Need to find that guy though.. that has been my biggest problem.

I wish you both happy, healthy and uneventful pregnancies!!

FYI.. there is a great forum for over 40 and pregnant: fertilityover40.com Lots of good people there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
