Fills and delayed restriction

Recommended Posts

Why when you get a fill , on that day it seems like no restriction , even though you are on liquids or very soft, next day fill really seems to kick in. Is that just me or do others have that feeling?

I have immediate restriction, but I have heard some people say that it can take a week or more.

The last 2 fills have resulted in unfills....the day and evening of the fill I am fine then the next morning I am completely blocked. Very bad feeling and by the time I got in for an unfill this time I was dehydrated and had lost 4 pounds of Fluid weight. Flouro may be in my future!!!

I wondered this same thing. It varies for me, but a friend of mine who works in the same office as me just recently had a fifth fill and experienced no restriction for nearly a week and then it kicked in. We just recently had a conversation about this.

I had my 3rd fill last week, was disappointed it was only .5cc and made an appt. for this week - didn't think it'd take more than a week! Still no more restriction, or just a touch...hope another won't block me...

I had my first fill 1cc, liquid diet for 2 days. Then third day......nice restriction. As the weeks gone by I don't feel the same restriction.......what's up with that?

I have not had my first fill yet did anyone kind of feel not restricted at all after surgery? I am starting soft solids and seem fine with it, is this normal? I have not felt nauseas nor have I vomited. not that I want to but is this normal?

I've had the same loss of restriction after a little while. The last .5 cc didn't even give me a little change in restriction even after a week+

I didn't have anything in my band from surgery, so after everything healed there was no restrictive feeling. I didn't have any nausea or anything either.

I think it is normal NOT to feel restrict ion after surgery. By the time you get to soft solids, any swelling you had from having the band placed has probably gone down. I also, luckily, did not suffer from nausea or vomiting, but I did have restriction just from having the band placed.

When I get a fill, I immediately feel restriction and it takes a few days for me to get used to it, then all is good. Each time I get a fill, I unfortunately have to learn how to eat again. SLOW and WELL CHEWED. I seem to forget this between fills, but I get a sudden, swift, and often painful reminder immediately following a fill.

The husband says "Even when I remind her she forgets." You would think 8 months out, I'd begin to remember - apparently I'm a slow learner.

I must certainly be doing something very wrong. My surgery was 11/5/08 and I have yet to loose 30 lbs! I've had 6 adjustments at least. I'm going to call the doctor and find out what he thinks is wrong. From some of the posts I've read it seems I might have a leak. What a horrible thought.

Avrietta,

I try to be sure to get all my Protein and liquids each day, if I get nothing besides that and my complete Vitamin and 3 calciums/D a day I don't worry about it. Perhaps the weight loss is also based on BMI (I was over 53 to begin with, so figure I would lose perhaps faster than someone smaller since I was eating and not exercising before).

Avrietta: Don't automatically assume it is a leak. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), sometimes it is just our behavior we have to blame. Not knowing all your circumstance, my assumption would be that you are not following a plan. Are you relying on the band alone to control your appetite? Or, are you following a plan? If not, I would suggest that you do some research and find one that works for your lifestyle. For me, I use Weight Watchers. That provides me a nutritional framework that works well with the lap-band tool. Using WW I know that I am getting enough calories, but not too many, to lose weight at a consistent rate.

Also, what is your activity level? Are you able to exercise a little each day? If not, I would recommend that you begin to do a little each day and build to even one hour each day.

Whether or not we have the lap-band, science is the same. If you use more calories that you consume, you will lose weight. However, not consuming enough calories causes our metabolism to slow down. That confuses the equation so that often we find ourselves not losing weight when we think we should be. Finding that right balance for you of exercising and consuming should be a goal.

In short, I would make every effort before jumping to the assumption that you have a leak in your band. If you have been a good bander and have followed all the rules, follow a plan, and have a good exercise program, then your concerns might be valid.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
