Gaining weight since my surgery

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on April 22nd. At first I seemed to be losing, but now I have put on a few pounds - I'm feeling like its Water weight (I know I'm not drinking enough - but its so hard to get it down). I was on an anti-inflamatory for 2 1/2 years prior to the surgery (mobic - 15 mg - pretty strong). My legs are definitely looking puffier than prior to surgery.

I also have a pulled hamstring (I think) and have had to take it somewhat easy with walking, but I am trying to walk a little more every day. When I spent more time in bed, my feet were elevated and they didn't get swollen - now they are feeling swollen - but not a tremendous amount. I'm thinking that the salt in the Soup isn't helping - so yesterday I made my own.

Has anyone experienced this? I go to my doctor on wed. I know I am eating about 800 - 1000 calories a day.

Relax, it's fairly common. Happened to me. During the liquid, mushy and transitional phases of the post-op diet, I went up and down but never really stayed below my weight the day of surgery. Once I was EATING meals, drinking Water got easier...I think I was tired of drinking, LOL. Once you make it to the stage where you are getting fills, you will start to feel restriction and it will get easier to stick to the diet part because the band will help you to feel full longer. Everybody says where you are now isn't about losing, it's about healing. So don't stress yourself out over this. Make the best food choices you can and GOOD LUCK.

I was worried, too. I lost some weight on liquids, but then I stopped losing, and even gained four pounds on soft and regular food. I just got my first fill on Tuesday, and trust me - it makes a huge difference. Especially if you're getting it under fluoro.

Way to target the salt intake! That should make a difference in the swelling. Let us know how it goes.

Hang in there!!! We're all in this 2gether! :)

thanks so much for the posts... I'm really letting that sink in that I just need to heal now and will have this to use as a tool forever. Its funny - not having more than 1000 calories and there is still the tendency to beat myself up...lol. But I'm doing ok - and yesterday had homemade Soup.< /p>

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
