Throwing Up...Regurgitating..

Recommended Posts

Morning all!

Just want to get clarification because I have yet to throw up. I was banded on 4/13/09 and need some reassurance and/or a reality check. Now, when one regurgitates does it affect one's band at all. I mean, is it safe, so to speak? I'm still on liquids and the closest I've become to bringing anything back up is from not having had a bowel movement in 5 days.

Keep hearing about food getting stuck and that scares me. I just keep picturing this tiny hole that the food is able to pass thru and the thought of eating real food is scary(although I can not WAIT!)

OK, enough..thanks guys.

Sheila

Let's just say it's coming!! I had not thrown up at all until I had my first fill. It's something that happens, the band has it's 'on and off' times sort of...times it will be fine and times you'll feel every ounce of food attempting to go down. When it comes back, it's fairly simple (for me) due to all of the excessive liquid your body creates. And, most times, prior to throw up, sliming occurs and that's something you'll know when you feel, see it and do it! Hang in there. I was banded on March 12, 09 and have lost 47to date.

Actually, I've been banded over 10 months and I haven't had the need to "throw up" at all. A couple times times a productive burb might have helped, I even tried to force myself to, but was unsuccessful, just some sliming. BTW, it is not technically "throwing up" or "regurgitating" but rather a burp preceded by the food that is lodged in your esophogus. At least, that's what I understand. So, dubbee, don't automatically assume this is something in your future. Also, it should not even be an issue until you start eating solids and start getting your fills and some restriction anyway. Just relax about it. When you get off liquids, and start eating food, remember to chew your food well, eat slowly, and stop eating when you feel a tightness in your esophogus area. Follow those rules your Doctor told you about. If getting stuck often becomes an issue tell your Doctor who may decide you are too restricted.

Most important, be patient with yourself. Don't expect a rapid weight loss right away. You will get there in time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
