Hi,

I am a carb addict. I have never been crazy about meat. I need suggestions for Protein . Anyone?

I love Mexican food, especially bean and cheese burritos. YUM. I love bread and other flour things. I know I am going to have to lay off my beloved carbs big time when I get my sleeve. I want to be successful, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Do you think slim fast is a good option for a Protein Shake? Or does it have too many carbs?

I can tolerate shrimp, some chicken, and crane asada. But overall meat is a :) for me. What else can I eat for protein.

Thanks for your help.

I don't eat beef, pork, or lamb... nothing against them but I don't like the taste. I eat fish, chicken, and turkey for Protein. Salads with a can of tuna and some nuts is a high protein source. Egg whites are pure protein (egg drop Soup, yum) and cheeses and nuts have protein but you have to watch the fat and calories. I am not a tofu fan but that is high protein also.

Slim fast is too many carbs!

No to Slim Fast. What about Atkins Advantage? Those aren't bad.

You want to shoot for around 20gms protein in less than 200 calories. Mine have 23gms protein for 120 calories and 2gms carbs. I use whey Gourmet and EAS.

Have you been to see a nutrionist? Mine was very helpful and gave me a printout of foods high in Protein. Dairy is good, depending on your tolerance.

Also try Peanut Butter, and if you can tolerate tofu you can put it in with scrambled eggs. Actually, I think tofu is ok if you cook it with other things. It becomes very unnoticeable.

Good luck!

EAS why Protein Powder has a ton of Protein in it - and you can dress it up rather easily so it doesn't get boring. Also - have you tried other meats? Maybe try Bison or Pork Loin (a leaner cut of pork) or even some fish options. There are a lot of other choices out there

Slim Fast does make several versions of slim fast. One is a low carb slim fast. I would rather buy the whey Gourmet Peanut Butter and chocolate though. It's delicious and it's whey (WAY) (pun intended) cheaper!

Rosey, I am not sure about alt Protein sources as I am new to this and not sleeved yet but I wanted you you to know you are not alone in carb addiction. People assume if you are overweight you must eat an entire pie or 12 donuts. I have never done that in my entire life. I can pass on any sweets. Now sit me in front of a baked potato with all the fixings and I can eat 3. Ranch with fries? Bring it on! Any Pasta with a nice cream sauce was heaven.

I have started to wean myself off carbs already. I have to lose 10lbs before surgery so it is now or never for me.

Good Luck. I have been following your threads.

I'm no good at weening myself off carbs, it's all or none. If I get started on carbs the more I eat the more I want. When I have to stop the carb cycle I do the 5DPT and that is what works for me.

What is 5DPT? I have just been looking at what I am eating and if it has carbs I cut the portion in half. bread? Half a slice. Potato? Half.

Yeah it sucks.

It's the five day pouch test. I do 2 days of Protein shakes, 2 days of soft Proteins, and 1 day of hard Protein. No carbs. By that time I quit craving them and I can eat my usual stuff.

Thank you. When is your surgery date? It looks like you are going through the insurance qualifications. Mine is June 29.

Quorn (sold at Krogers) is a good, healthy option. You could also get Profect Protein Drinks which have btw 25g to 50g Protein and zero carbs. There are also high protein, low sugar/carb hot chocolate, Soups and oatmeals available on most large health-food websites. I can't remember the brand name but if you do a google search you can even find high protein pastas.< /p>

My surgery is at Balboa Naval Hospital so I can't get a sugery date until I lose the required 10% of extra weight which is about 10lbs for me. I can do all my pre-op stuff though. I stopped taking NSAIDS just in case I can lose the weight real quick like and have all my stuff done. My paperwork says I can't take NSAIDS or asprin for one month before surgery.

I am excited for you! June 29th is not *that* far away when you think about it!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
