Hello, I am not going to mexico. I have family and friends that live in mexico. The main thing is to not be out walking around the streets and visting stores. Take some handsanitizer with you also. Use that everytime u touch doors and stuff. I wish you all the best. You might want to check into the flights also. I have heard they are thinking of not letting anyone fly into the US from Mexico. I am not sure if its true.

Hi I have family that are in Mexico and were coming this weekend for a family gathering and now are now not able to come because the visa offices are not processing anything. Please take all precautions and Good Luck. Just a question? You are doing the Surgery in Mexico because of the cost? I have a great Dr. in Dallas, Texas that did mine for $9,990 with 6 fills and Office visits. I did a cash payment my insurance would not cover and financing was crazy at 24% for 6 years. bye bye vacation money .... hello new health me!!!!!

Timah85 Masks do no protect you againest the swine flu and other flu. Virus particles are so small that the go through the mask. You have just as much change of getting the swine flu as the regular flu and the both are treated with the same drugs. Mexico does not have the health care that we have in the us that is why there are so many more deaths there. The regular flu kills 13000 people a year in the us. Sorry i know i am going on and on but i hate how the media scares everyone to death and people start to panick. Just keep your hands clean do not touch you face the virus lives up to 2 hrs on surfaces. But even with that the virus can be passed through the air. I would still go

please please please wear a mask on that airplane! even if someone has a regular cold you always catch it because you are in such close proximity on the plane! They said the swine flu stays in the air for 1 hour so even if someone on your flight doesnt have it, someone on the previous flight might have! wear that mask!

I'm a nursing student (graduate this may) at the Univ of Tex Health Science Ctr in San Antonio Tx.

Here's a link our president sent to us that may help you:

Swine influenza and Severe Cases of Respiratory Illness in Mexico | CDC Travelers' Health

Media or not, our school is taking this threat very seriously. Locally several DISTRICTS have closed schools for the next week or so...it's not just hype to make "news". Vitamin D won't help prevent it and the flu shots from this last year aren't really helpful either.

My surgery is scheduled in Mexico on May 15th and I am not fearful. The only fear that I have is that my surgery will be delayed / cancelled due to the swine flu.

Hey. I am a medical assitant and any of our patients that are going into Mexico we are giving Tamiflu. It's a preventative messure and you could talk to your PCP about it. Good luck. Lots of hand washing. No toughing your eyes, nose or mouth. No shaking hands. Unfortunately, masks don't do a whole lot.

Thanks everyone for your input, I appreciate it!

V-Dallas...I also found some doctors that are around $10k as well, but I couldn't pass up $6k for everything. I can get the fills here in OR for a good price with someone my mom has been going to for a couple years now.

Reneek...Ive come to the same conclusion...I know it's very scary, but it seems it's so hyped up and Im stressing for no reason. Although many are saying no mask, and that it wont do much, and others are arguing it does, Im gonna wear one anyway...eh if it doesn't help, no harm done, if it does...then great, right?:(

I'll have to look into the Tamiflu and Vitamin D as well.

Thanks again everybody and stay healthy!!

Our President, thinks "we the people" want to spend over 300,000 dollars for a new picture of airforce one flying around New York. That way people have a nice picture as a souvenir after riding on Airforce one. I don't value his thinking anymore.

Let's get the facts balanced out on this topic. First, I am glad you are going to Mexico and what is key about all the Mexico phobias (Cartels/Flu/etc) is simply be cautious and know where you are going and do your homework.

The swine flu should be put into perspective with the common flu...

1. In the USA each year 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications

CDC - Influenza (Flu) | What Everyone Should Know About Flu and the Flu Vaccine

2. In the USA eaxh year 36,000 people die from it

CDC - Influenza (Flu) | What Everyone Should Know About Flu and the Flu Vaccine

3. The Riverside county office of environmental health is currently saying "all indications are the Swine flu is a milder form of the flu we fight every year"

Riverside County Department of Environmental Health - Office Locations

4. Baja Mexico (assuming that is where you are going) is 900 miles from Mexico city where most of the reports of Mexico deaths are noted

Google Earth

5. As of April 31, Baja Mexico has not reported any confirmed cases of swine flu (10 people being observed only)..

6. There are at least 2 medications that cure the swine flu

Zanamivir or oseltamivir, Amantadine or rimantadine

7. You cannot prevent the flu or make yourself feel better faster by taking, Antibiotics, large doses of Vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin C or zinc or Herbal remedies, such as echinacea.

Influenza-Medications

8. There is no "carrier state" of this flu. Meaning you can only get it from someone that is sick not from someone "carrying" it. Source: my doctor

9. I returned from central Mexico 2 weeks ago amoung 1000's of tourists. I am fine.

10. Fly into San Deigo then have a clinic chartered driver take you to the clinic.

Just my 2 cents on this.

Thanks everyone for your input, I appreciate it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
