appetite and the sleeve

Hi everyone,

I'll be getting my sleeve in two months. I've been really paying attention to my body lately and I'm noticing what an emotional eater I truly am. I eat for stress, boredom, loneliness, etc. etc. etc.

First, do you still get the urge to snack, and if so, what do you do because you can't eat.

No surgery type fixes head hunger, that is something you learn to deal with as you go. It does happen, you do eventually learn to find other ways to deal with emotions and such.

I am 4 weeks post-op and never experienced restriction with the band. With VSG, I experienced restriction from day one. I literally get full on a small amount of food and stay full. With the hunger hormone gone, I honestly have never felt hungry once.

This evening, I had one small meatball (2' diameter) and 4 individual penne Pasta. That's it. I was stuffed and could not eat anything else. For me, this is all new with a lot of firsts. I was a fat kid and a fat adult and it always took a LOT of food to fill me up. I never stayed full long. Now that I get full with a little food and stay full, the emotional aspects of eating have not been an issue. I hope this never goes away.

I worry about that myself. I know I will only be able to eat small portions and I think that's great.

My problem is going to be at work. They always have huge candy bowls with all every type of mini candy bar I truly love. I usually put a piece of typing paper over it so I don't have to look at it. It's right next to the copy machine so I have to go in there often.

I do fine most of the time, but there are times when I am in a foul mood over something that's bothering me and I

just say "the heck with it" and eat it. Once I get started it's really hard to stop. I have a feeling that I will not get that full feeling from chocolate. I really hope I lose my sweet cravings like everyone else is saying.

I second that wish Daisy -- my office is the same way -- and around the holidays - OMG - you should see the stuff the vendors send us -- you can't walk anywhere in the office without having something to tempt you ... Thankfully there aren't candy dishes by the copier ... just everywhere else. I generally can control myself, except when I'm in a foul mood ... I think candy dishes should be outlawed in the office!:thumbdown:

I think all junk food should be banned from the office. It's different for instance, that my co-worker is a skinny tooth pick. She always eats lunch at her desk, and always has a bag of chips for instance. That does not bother me.

What bothers me is when my boss, who loves to bake, brings in cakes, pies, Cookies, etc, and is constantly saying "have some. I made these to share with you"

I put a sign up at Christmas time that said "Daisy has gained 7 lbs and she is not happy. Please do not offer

any in between meal any snacks"

I don't think chocolate cravings ever go away. One ounce of dark chocolate is considered healthy! LOL.

The problem is that I can't stop once I start. The day I found out my dad broke his pelvis, one of our clients brought in a bag of dove Easter eggs. I ate the entire bag over an hour's period. I was "just going to have one"

They were dark chocolate and I like milk chocolate better, but that sure did not stop me!

Sweets were never an issue for me. I could say no to them without any problem. And now, anything the least little bit sweet actually turns my stomach.

My problem has been and still is the crunchy, salty stuff. I love chips and this dip I make more than anything. So, I am forcing myself to avoid those because I am afraid once I start, I won't be able to stop.

I wonder how many chips one would be able to eat since we get full so fast. It would seem, not enough to do much damage considering the size of our stomachs.

Processed food is high in simple carbohydrates and they begin to be digested in the mouth. You CAN gain weight with the sleeve if you don't watch calories. Remember Dr. A. saying you can eat a handful of food that is either 300 calories or 1000 calories depending on what you select?

I love dark chocolate with Peanut Butter. I eat way more chocolate then I should. I eat Russell Stovers "sugar free" so that I don't feel so bad afterwards, but who are we kidding, it is still bad calories.

Yikes! Be careful with the sugar free stuff. They use mannitol and sorbitol to sweeten it and those are laxatives! LOL.

Oh I am not big into chips. I was just wondering how full certain things make us with this tiny stomach. Ice cream is definitely my down fall and with the band, I could eat way too much. It just slid right through the band. I know I have to stay away from it. I am really curious though if getting full fast with the small stomach applies to all foods. This is all new to me.

I think the experienced sleeve people can tell you it does not apply to all foods. Ice-cream slides on down as does high calorie drinks. The same foods that went down easily with the band go down the sleeved stomach.
