VSG: A cure for this Chocaholic!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Was in Whole Foods this am getting Vitamins. Went to get coffee at the coffee stand, they had bits of this new organic, dark chocolate out as samples.

I took one small piece and proceeded to checkout. Boy, was it sickenly sweet! I was suprised because this is dark chocolate, which I used to find not sweet enough pre VSG.

I have finally cured my sweet tooth which was my downfall with every diet and the lapband. I'm so happy. I am also down 30# since surgery, and back in my medium scrubs!

Anybody know what % of people lose their love for chocolate post-op (I hope to be one... :)?

Do all VSGers get their normal appetite back at 1.5 to 3 years?

I have not lost my love of chocolate and enjoyed some diet hot choc. today. As for a return of a normal appetite, I don't know if that is possible with the majority of the stomach gone.

Not "your" normal appetite, as in what you had pre-op, but a really normal appetite. Like thin people have.

When it comes back really varies though. I think mine is close to normal now, in fact. It probably really isn't though. It's just that I heard all these stories about how "I'm 18 months out and I never feel hungry" and that hasn't been my experience. I do get hungry when it's been a while since I ate and/or I've exercised intensely, but there isn't a lot of force behind it and it's easy to get busy and forget to eat.

OMG -- HATE chocolate? I could only WISH to hate chocolate -- although I can pass milk chocolate by no problem, put good dark chocolate in front of me and I'm a goner ... hope I lose the taste for it after surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
